Abstract-In the present study evaluation of L-band SAR data at different polarization combinations in linear, circular as well as hybrid polarimetric imaging modes for crop and other landuse classifications has been carried out. Full-polarimetric radar data contains all the scattering information for any arbitrary polarization state, hence data of any combination of transmit and receive polarizations can be synthesized, mathematically from full-polarimetric data. Circular and various modes of hybrid polarimetric data (where the transmitter polarization is either circular or orientated at 45 • , called π/4 and the receivers are at horizontal and vertical polarizations with respect to the radar line of sight) were synthesized (simulated) from ALOS-PALSAR fullpolarimetric data of 14th December 2008 over central state farm central latitude and longitude 29 • 15 N/75 • 43 E and bounds for northwest corner is 29 • 24 N/75 • 37 E and southeast corner is 29 • 07 N/75 • 48 E in Hisar, Haryana (India) Supervised classification was conducted for crops and few other landuse classes based on ground truth measurements using maximum-likelihood distance measures derived from the complex Wishart distribution of SAR data at various polarization combinations. It has been observed that linear fullpolarimetric data showed maximum classification accuracy (92%) followed by circular-full (89%) and circular-dual polarimetric data (87%), which was followed by hybrid polarimetric data (73-75%) and then linear dual polarimetric data (63-71%). Among the linear dual polarimetric data, co-polarization complex data showed better classification accuracy than the cross-polarization data. Also multidate single polarization SAR data over central state farm during rabi (winter) season was analyzed and it was observed that single date fullpolarimetric SAR data produced equally good classification result as the multi-date single polarization SAR data.

Melt ponds are a common feature on Arctic sea ice. They are linked to the sea ice surface albedo and transmittance of energy to the ocean from the atmosphere and thus constitute an important process to parameterize in Arctic climate models and simulations. This paper presents a first attempt to retrieve the melt pond fraction from hybrid‐polarized compact polarization (CP) SAR imagery, which has wider swath and shorter revisit time than the quad‐polarization systems, e.g., from RADARSAT‐2 (RS‐2). The co‐polarization (co‐pol) ratio has been verified to provide estimates of melt pond fractions. However, it is a challenge to link CP parameters and the co‐pol ratio. The theoretical possibility is presented, for making this linkage with the CP parameter C22/C11 (the ratio between the elements of the coherence matrix of CP SAR) for melt pond detection and monitoring with the tilted‐Bragg scattering model for the ocean surface. The empirical transformed formulation, denoted as the “compact polarization and quad‐pol” (“CPQP”) model, is proposed, based on 2062 RS‐2 quad‐pol SAR images, collocated with in situ measurements. We compared the retrieved melt pond fraction with CP parameters simulated from quad‐pol SAR data with results retrieved from the co‐pol ratio from quad‐pol SAR observations acquired during the Arctic‐Ice (Arctic‐Ice Covered Ecosystem in a Rapidly Changing Environment) field project. The results are shown to be comparable for observed melt pond measurements in spatial and temporal distributions. Thus, the utility of CP mode SAR for melt pond fraction estimation on first year level ice is presented.

This chapter critically summarizes the main theoretical aspects necessary for a correct processing and interpretation of the polarimetric information towards the development of applications of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) polarimetry. First of all, the basic principles of wave polarimetry (which deals with the representation and the understanding of the polarization state of an electromagnetic wave) and scattering polarimetry (which concerns inferring the properties of a target given the incident and the scattered polarized electromagnetic waves) are given. Then, concepts regarding the description of polarimetric data are reviewed, covering statistical and scattering aspects, the latter in terms of coherent and incoherent decomposition techniques. Finally, polarimetric SAR interferometry and tomography, two acquisition modes that enable the extraction of the 3-D scatterer position and separation, respectively, and their polarimetric characterization, are described.
