Compact Multiband Planar Antenna for 2.4/3.5/5.2/5.8-GHz Wireless Applications

Abstract: A low-profile planar monopole antenna is proposed to operate within WLAN and WiMax frequency bands. The antenna is composed three radiating elements together with an additional strip to control the antenna performance. An electromagnetic (EM) model of the proposed antenna is developed in CST Microwave Studio for numerical analysis and optimization. The principle of operation and parametric study on the antenna performance are provided. Two dual-band and triple-band antennas are fabricated and experimental resu… Show more

“…But the design is complex and dimensions are not still optimum (20×22×1.6 mm 2 ). A circular planar antenna is mentioned in [7] for triple band operation. But then again, the size is still large.…”

“…Throughout the literature survey, different methods to achieve dual-band [1][2][3], tripleband [4][5][6][7][8] and four-band [9,10] have been studied. To generate multiple operating bands, the most popular approach is to introduce slots on radiating patch or ground plane of the antenna or insert strips to a slot antenna.…”

“…A planar monopole four-band antenna (22 mm × 29 mm) consist of three radiating elements together with an additional strip to control the antenna performance is presented in Ref. [9]. More recently a four-band slot antenna [10] for the GPS, WiMAX, and WLAN systems is proposed.…”

“…However, narrow-bandwidth characteristic of individual mode is one of the limitations for PIFA, and its 3D structure may be a fabrication challenge [4]. Numerous techniques for multiband planar monopole antenna design have been presented in literature, e.g., Land U-shaped slots [5], an additional strip [6], multiresonator-loaded structures including a pair of symmetrical edge resonators and a T-shaped stub resonator [7], U-shaped slot with paper substrate [8], dual inverted L-shaped strips [9], two spiral ring strips [10], a modified fork-shaped strip [11], a chopped circular radiator appended with a meander line and an L-strip coupled element [12], a slot-ring antenna with single-and dual-capacitive coupled patch [13], a rhombic patch with modified minkowski fractal geometry [14], and a two-strip monopole loaded with a chip capacitor and an L-shape high-pass filter [15]. However, design of a compact multiband monopole antenna with sufficient bandwidth at three frequency bands remains a challenge.…”
