Compact high-resolution spectral phase shaper

Abstract: The design and operation of a high-resolution spectral phase shaper with a footprint of only 7 ϫ 10 cm 2 is presented. The liquid-crystal modulator has 4096 elements. More than 600 independent degrees of freedom can be positioned with a relative accuracy of 1 pixel. The spectral shaping of pulses from a broadband Ti:sapphire laser is verified by a hybrid cross-frequency-resolved optical gating/Grenouille measurement and intensity autocorrelation. We demonstrate the ability to split one pulse into two or more p… Show more

“…Orthogonally polarized pump and probe pulses are derived from a mode‐locked Ti:Sapphire laser with a pulse duration of 150 fs at a wavelength of 720 nm and a repetition rate of 76 MHz. After cutting out subspectra using a grating pulse shaper 44 the pulses have a duration of about 1 ps and a spectral width of 4 meV. The pump pulses are delayed by a time Δ t with respect to the probe pulses using a mechanical delay stage before the two beams are recombined again by a polarizing beamsplitter.…”

“…For the absolute positioning of phase profiles the complete number of pixels can be used, which implies a positioning precision of 14 GHz (0.5 cm -1 ). Further details of the spectral shaper setup can be found in an earlier publication [2]. The shaped Ti:Sapphire pulses are used as the pump and probe pulses in the CARS process.…”

“…For the absolute positioning of phase profiles the complete number of pixels can be used, which implies a positioning precision of 0.47 cm -1 (14 GHz). Further details and description of the calibration of the spectral shaper setup can be found in an earlier publication [21]. The pulses of the Ti:Sapphire laser are pre-compressed by an external prism compressor (this prevents wasting degrees of freedom on the shaper to compensate simple dispersion) and shaped to be Fourier limited (at the position of the sample) by the spectral phase shaper using an evolutionary learning algorithm [22], with SHG signal from a thin (10 µm) BiB 3 O 6 crystal at the location of the sample as feedback.…”
