Compact Dual-Wavelength Lasers on InP Generic Foundry Platform

Abstract: We propose and implement four simple and compact dual-wavelength laser concepts integrated in a Photonic Integrated Circuit (PIC) based on a InP generic foundry platform. In a first step, we arrange two detuned Distributed-Bragg-Reflectors (DBR) in either a sequential or in a parallel order, acting as narrowband wavelength selective cavity mirrors. In a second step, we close the cavities by using either a third DBR or by using a Multimode-Interference-Reflector (MIR). We present LIcharacteristics and optical s… Show more

“…With this design, distinct cavities are defined for each wavelength, thus leading to a different separation between longitudinal modes; 31.9 GHz and 41.2 GHz, for wavelengths 𝜆 1 and 𝜆 2 respectively. The same laser structure has already been used and its emission properties have been partially characterized in previous works [19,20].…”

“…The dual-wavelength laser (DWL) structures investigated in this work were fabricated on the InP generic foundry platform offered by SmartPhotonics 19 . These structures consist of Fabri-Perot cavities where the gain consists of a multi-quantumwell InGaAs semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA).…”

“…These structures consist of Fabri-Perot cavities where the gain consists of a multi-quantumwell InGaAs semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA). The laser cavity is formed by a broadband 2-port multimode interference reflector (MIR) on one side, and, on the other side, two narrowband distributed Bragg reflectors (DBR) which act as wavelength selective elements, see 19 for details. These laser structures emit at two distinct wavelengths with 10 nm mode separation.…”

“…Here, we used DBR-based dual-wavelength devices which have partially been described elsewhere. 14 Although we have studied many different DWLs, we focus here on one specific structure whose schematic is shown in Figure 2. Two DBRs of 450 µm length are placed in parallel.…”
