COMP2CAT: hunting compact double radio sources in the local Universe

Abstract: We present a catalog of compact double radio galaxies (hereafter COMP2CAT ) listing 43 edge-brightened radio sources whose projected linear size does not exceed 60 kpc, the typical size of their host galaxies. This is the fifth in a series of radio source catalogs recently created, namely: FRICAT , FRIICAT , FR0CAT and WATCAT , each focused on a different class of radio galaxies. The main aim of our analysis is to attain a better understanding of sources with intermediate morphologies between FR IIs and FR 0s.… Show more

“…small sources with very weak jets, and low-luminosity FRIIs (e.g. Best & Heckman 2012;Fernandes et al 2015;Baldi et al 2015;Capetti et al 2017b;Miraghaei & Best 2017;Mingo et al 2019;Jimenez-Gallardo et al 2019;Macconi et al 2020;Pierce et al 2020;Grandi et al 2021;Vardoulaki et al 2021). Environmental studies have also demonstrated links between environment and both radio morphology and accretion mode (Gendre et al 2013;Ineson et al 2015;Croston et al 2019;Vardoulaki et al 2021).…”

“…Recently, some authors have started looking into physically small radio galaxies (e.g. Jarvis et al 2019; Jimenez-★ E-mail: brendan.webster@open.ac.uk Gallardo et al 2019;Webster et al 2021) where observations of shock fronts (Croston et al 2009;Mingo et al 2011Mingo et al , 2012 provide evidence of direct feedback between jets and the host ISM. These sources may provide an opportunity for better understanding how feedback from radio galaxies affects galaxy evolution.…”

“…Bicknell et al 2018;Tadhunter 2016b), along with some studies of intermediate-size radio structures (e.g. Jarvis et al 2019;Jimenez-Gallardo et al 2019). However, the advent of telescopes such as the International LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR) Telescope, with its combination of high sensitivity to both compact and extended emission (Shimwell et al 2017), allows for the systematic identification of sources with sizes on scales similar to that of the host galaxy, together with the study of the potential effects these sources can have upon their host environments.…”
