Commuters’ Personal Exposure to Ambient and Indoor Ozone in Athens, Greece

Abstract: This pilot study aimed to monitor the residential/office indoor, outdoor, and personal levels of ozone for people living, working, and commuting in Athens, Greece. Participants (16 persons) of this study worked at the same place. Passive sampling analysis results did not indicate any limit exceedance (Directive 2008/50/EC: 120 µg/m 3 , World Health Organization (WHO) Air Quality Guidelines 2005: 100 µg/m 3 ). The highest "house-outdoor" concentration was noticed for participants living in the north suburbs of … Show more

“…Ozone is very reactive with high oxidizing potential and thus there are many possible scenarios for ozone decay indoors. Concerning O 3 , there was an indication of strong sinks indoors as was also reported in office and school environments with similar values [77,78]. Building materials in offices and various types of design decorations can be considerable sinks for indoor ozone due to the irreversible heterogeneous reactions between ozone and material surfaces [79,80].…”

“…[16][17][18][19] Corresponding weak relationships have also been found between outdoor and personal exposure concentrations of PM 2.5 . 20,21 Despite significant positive correlations observed between indoor and outdoor ozone concentrations, 22,23 the indoor ozone levels have been low compared to the outdoor levels and are strongly influenced by the building ventilation and airtightness of its shield. Since people spend most of their daily time indoors in developed countries, their total personal exposure depends mostly on indoor concentrations of air pollutants, in other words on infiltrated outdoor air pollutants and indoor-generated pollutants.…”

“…A database compiling indoor concentrations in office buildings was developed by including the results from 69 studies 19,21,25‐91 . Of these, 12 are reports from the French air quality monitoring network 55‐59,63‐67,70,71 .…”
