Community Structure of the Mangrove Forest in the Tourism Area of Pariaman City, West Sumatra

Abstract: The present study aims to determine mangrove community structure in the mangrove tourism area of Pariaman City. This study has been conducted in October to December 2019 using the purposive sampling method and belt transect in three stations. A total of 21 mangrove species, 20 genera and 19 families was identified in this area. The tree level vegetation of mangroves was dominated by Sonneratia caseolaris (INP = 140,23%). “…The mangrove ecosystem is a coastal location where the bottom is always moist due to tides. As a result, the mangrove ecosystem plays a vital role in supporting numerous living forms inside it from an ecological, economic, and physical standpoint [1,2]. Mangrove habitats provide a vital function not only for humans, but also for the diverse fauna that reside in them (particularly aquatic wildlife), such as a place to live, spawn, and find food [3,4] and molluscs [5].…”

In contrast, the former has a more fragile ecosystem and is more affected by the development of tourism activities [20][21][22].…”

“…Crustacea such as crabs are macrobenthic animals that live in association with mangroves. Ecologically, mangrove areas have high productivity to support the surrounding environment because they are rich in nutrients with optimum temperature, pH, oxygen, and salinity and calm water conditions so that they are suitable for crab habitat (Sen et al 2014;Alvareza and Leilani 2020). Crabs eat suspended matter (filter feeders), eat mangrove litter and fresh mangrove leaves and are generally very dominant on sandy and muddy substrates.…”
