Community’s knowledge need and knowledge sharing in Wikipedia

Abstract: Purpose In practice, showing the community’s need for knowledge (e.g. listing requests for new articles) is used to drive knowledge sharing in Wikipedia. Yet, theoretical understanding of how it influences one’s knowledge sharing is still lacking. The aim of this study is to develop a model of the influence and show that one takes others’ utility into account (utility interdependence). Design/methodology/approach The proposed model was tested with data collected in a survey of 323 Wikipedia users. Findings… Show more

“…Moreover, due to the lower innovation-absorption capabilities and to the limited resources for in-house RandD, companies need to develop a broad network of partners which can give them scientific and technological inputs (Knudsen, 2007;Dezi et al, 2018). This is the reason why nowadays information and communication technologies allow a fast and worldwide data and information, and associate a pivotal role to knowledge sharing (KS) practices within a company (Lin, 2007;Sá enz et al, 2009;Pee, 2018). As Wehn and Montalvo (2018, p. 1) stated KS "is based on personal interactions and common actions to achieve specific goals and results.…”

“… This study applies ABMS approach to explore the correlation between the reciprocal trust of members and the efficiency of knowledge transfer under different organizational structure Specifically, the method consists of four steps: set up agents that reflect members within an organization who seek or provide the knowledge with their partners (learning partner); model the network where agents interact under behavioral rules; construct ABMS for knowledge transfer procedure; and explore the influence of reciprocal trust and organizational structure on knowledge transfer. The majority of prior studies has measured altruism in terms of intrinsic motivation or personal belief and has focused on the utility of sharing knowledge (Pee, 2018). Within economics, the concept of utility is created by achieving self-fulfilling objectives when determining behavioral options and has been shown to be relevant for understanding altruism theory.…”

“…Due to the lack of a centralized task allocation mechanism, participants independently decide contribution behavior. The degree of participant contribution is determined by many factors (Pee, 2018;Wang et al, 2019;Zhang and Zhu, 2011). This leads to inconsistency in participant contribution, with a few core members making the majority of the contribution and most participants only contributing occasionally (Ortega et al, 2008;Yun et al, 2019).…”
