Maps have been used for centuries to depict the diverse facets of our environment.Thematic maps depict a specific theme and help in revealing geospatial patterns and relations. The study and practice of map making has led to established cartographic design rules. Ever increasing availability of high-quality geospatial data coupled with continuously changing technologies for map making imply that one has to find the right mix between age-old principles and state-of-the-art technologies and trends when teaching thematic cartography. This paper presents a proposal on how to stimulate the creativity of students' thematic map making by describing the teaching approach and results of a map assignment for a course presented to a group of postgraduate geoinformatics students. Based on a reflection of the teaching and learning experience and an assessment of the thematic maps produced by the students, recommendations are provided for teaching today's university students how to create convincing and appealing thematic maps. An infographics summarizes the most important guidelines. Additionally, the student maps, as well as the maps revised by a trained cartographer, are available and can be used by others for teaching.

It is widely acknowledged that the tools for pedestrian navigation in indoor environments have been increasing while the internal spaces of buildings continue to grow in complexity. The majority of mobile applications for indoor navigation are mostly dependent on access to radio‐frequency identification (RFID) and WiFi, which are particularly limited and expensive in most of Sub‐Saharan Africa. In addition, data from Volunteered Geographic Information such as OpenStreetMap (OSM) lacked clear framework and specification for database design for indoor navigation. Accordingly, this study proposed and illustrated a new database framework for indoor navigation by taking advantage of the popular OSM tag information structure. The proposed framework characterized the indoor environment based on horizontal and vertical partitions, together with description of indoor features by using cardinal directions and qualitative descriptions. The framework was demonstrated by creating sample database records, and retrieval of step‐by‐step travel information for different internal configurations of the indoor environment. A key contribution of this framework is its simplistic and low‐cost nature, where user travel information is retrieved from the database with no need for communication signals from Global Positioning Systems, RFID, or WiFi, making it advantageous for low‐cost applications where access to these communication infrastructure are limited.

<p><strong>Abstract.</strong> The increase in massive volumes of point data that are continuously being generated calls for more powerful solutions to analyze and explore this data. Very often, such data includes a direct or indirect reference to a location on the Earth and can then be referred to as ‘big geospatial data’. Maps are one of the best ways to assist humans with understanding geospatial relationships in such data. In this paper, we present a comprehensive workflow for generating all possible thematic map types from two-dimensional univariate big geospatial point data. The objective is twofold: to facilitate and support thematic map automation, and to make this information accessible to software developers. The workflow illustrates processing steps, design choices and dependencies between them based on the characteristics of input data. Processing steps and design choices that can be automated and those requiring human intervention are identified. The scope of the workflow in this paper was restricted to two-dimensional univariate geospatial point data and planar and true geometrical map depictions. The results presented in this paper support the development of geovisualization and geovisual analytics tools for big geospatial data.</p>
