Community Knowledge, Attitude and Practices on Malaria Vector Control Strategies in Lagos State, South-West Nigeria

Abstract: Malaria is a leading public health challenge causing mortality and morbidity in sub-Saharan Africa. Prominent malaria vector control methods employed in sub-Saharan Africa include Long Lasting Insecticide Nets (LLINs) and Indoor Residual spraying (IRS). This study investigated knowledge, attitude and practices (KAP) of malaria vector control methods in Lagos, South-West Nigeria. Structured questionnaires were employed for the cross-sectional survey which was carried out between May and August 2018. Multi-stage… Show more

“…In reality, the success of most health programmes or campaigns especially in sub-Saharan Africa is contingent upon community disposition [31,33]. Besides, hygiene practices remains one of the uncontestable effective prevention methods against pandemic diseases, however, there are relatively little data on what behavioural changes take place in the presence of pandemic and what practices are sustained after such pandemic has been stopped or curtailed.…”

“…Understanding and enhancing households’ KAP was crucial for effective community disease control and prevention initiatives [Zhang et al, 2023]. KAP surveys were conducted in many parts of the world in order to understand the local contexts which should be useful for implementation of vector control for dengue, chikungunya, Zika and malaria [Stefopoulou et al, 2021; Omotayo et al, 2021; Kumaran et al, 2018; Jaramillo-Ramírez et al, 2017; Doblecki-Lewis et al, 2016; Mejía et al, 2016; Alobuia et al, 2015]. Some KAP surveys were used to study dengue vaccine acceptance [Shafie et al, 2023].…”

“…One major way employed in addressing the challenges of these diseases is the control of adult mosquitoes. Of all the control methods targeting the adult vector, 2 major strategies; Indoor residual spray (IRS) and long-lasting insecticide net (LLIN) are prominent, especially in Africa (Omotayo et al, 2021). Scale-up of these 2 methods in past years has been attributed to a decline in the incidence of diseases such as malaria (WHO, 2015).…”
