Community integration following moderate to severe traumatic brain injury: A longitudinal investigation

Abstract: After an initial decline, mean community integration scores gradually improve following moderate to severe traumatic brain injury. Understanding the course and determinants of community integration is necessary in order to determine functional prognosis following traumatic brain injury.

“…Socio-demographic factors, such as being older and male tend to be associated with reduced community integration after TBI. 23 Another study reported worse outcomes for older individuals but also conversely those who were female. 24,25 With respect to race/ethnicity, a number of studies have found that minority groups experience lower levels of community integration, [26][27][28] compared with white Americans, even after controlling for age, education, injury severity, and income.…”

“…The previous studies have measured community integration at rehabilitation admission, discharge, and up to three years post-injury and have primarily been conducted in the United States, 24,[35][36][37] with the exception of a Dutch study. 23 Because environmental factors, including the organization of and access to the health care and social security systems, may play an important role in community integration following TBI, 15 the lack of data outside the U.S. represents a serious gap in the literature. As such, the aims of this longitudinal study were twofold: to assess the trajectories of community integration in individuals with moderateto-severe TBI through one, two, and five years post-injury in Norway, and to investigate whether the trajectories of community integration could be predicted by demographic and injury characteristics.…”

“…In Europe annually 1.6 million patients with TBI are admitted to hospital [1]. About half of these patients experience some level of disability caused by TBI [2]. The impact of disability following TBI may be assessed by functional measurement scales that have been designed for TBI specifically (e.g.…”

“…Подібне порушення інтеграції в суспільство є за-гальним для всіх хворих після ЧМТ [5,14]. Побутова активність відновлюється, як правило, до вихідного рів-ня, а суспільна та професійна залишаються низькою, що підтверджується літературними даними [7] та було продемонстровано в проведеному дослідженні.…”
