Community Identification of Natural Health Product–Drug Interactions

Abstract: This survey provides evidence to suggest that pharmacists encounter reportable NHP-drug interactions, yet rarely choose to report these events. The current lack of available data on NHP AEs makes it difficult to provide patients and healthcare providers with useful strategies for managing AEs and drug interactions. Changes to the current system of monitoring AEs due to NHPs and further education of healthcare professionals regarding NHP-drug interactions is required.

“…A report released by Health Canada in 2005 estimated that 71 % of the Canadian population uses NHPs on a daily basis (1). At the same time a Canadian survey reported that 47% of those who use prescription drugs and natural health products together had adverse effects ranging from mild to severe rashes and serious effects by those who used blood thinners etc (2). Both functional foods and NHPs selected for health benefits contain bioactive secondary metabolites but their roles in promoting human health has not been thoroughly studied (3).…”

“…47 • Adverse events from NHP use, although infrequent, are more common than reported. 11, 48 All involved in patient care should be encouraged to report adverse events regardless of whether they are from conventional care, NHP/CAM use, or interaction of the two. Institutions should implement systems to prevent recurrence.…”

“…In a study of community pharmacists in England, 11% of the 818 respondents had identified or been informed by patients/consumers of adverse events associated with the use of complementary medicines (at least 60% related to herbal medicines, including traditional Chinese herbal medicines) [60]. In a similar study of community pharmacists in Canada, 47% of the 132 respondents stated that they had identified a potential interaction between a conventional drug and a natural health product [61]. In a prospective observational cohort study in 131 medical practices in Germany and 662 consecutive out-patients, patient-reported and physician-assessed adverse events associated with anthroposophical medicines (which include herbal and/or mineral ingredients) were monitored for 2 years [62].…”
