Landfills are a nuisance and an environmental feature whose siting creates uncertainty, anxiety and unrest in nearby residential neighborhoods. As such, hazards from Africa's largest Landfill in Nigeria were surveyed, considering a 3 km radius of the site. Primary data were collected across four seasons from 473 participants in neighborhoods situated within a 1, 1-2 and 2-3 km radius of the site. The research established that environmental and health hazards experienced differ significantly in space, due to exposure to landfill pollutants which varied in space. However, experience in both the dry and rainy seasons was the same. The overall results reveal that place dependence, social bonding and economic status are the significant factors influencing residents' decision to continue residing in their neighborhoods despite the hazards. The research advocated for more studies on the spatio-temporal pattern of hazardous land uses to ensure a sustainable environment that supports healthy living.

The problem of food wastage is becoming an increasingly worrying topic as the world is heading towards sustainability to preserve the quality and the perseverance of life on Earth. Such food waste is inclusive of fresh fruit and vegetable (FFV) which make up a substantial 60% of all food wasted around the globe. Hence the purpose of this study is to valorize the FFV waste into eco-enzymes for the purpose of wastewater treatment, as having clean water sources and cleaning greywater and blackwater before discharge back into the environment are an important factors in preserving public health worldwide. Only a total of 1% of the world's freshwater is accessible for human consumption, therefore it is important to save and recycle this precious resource. The objective of this study was to fully utilize the food waste in wastewater treatment. The production of eco-enzyme is done via the process of fermentation of FFV. In this study, eco-enzymes were generated from waste derived from vegetable and fruit. The vegetable eco-enzyme was fermented via S. cerevisiae for a total of 7 days. The fruit-produced eco-enzyme was fermented with brown sugar for three months with the native bacterial population present within the fruit as the fermentation agent. The eco-enzymes produced were used to treat the water samples collected from Menjalara Lake (3°11'42.2"N 101°37'39.7"E) and Keroh River (3°12'25.0"N 101°38'27.9"E). In addition, household rice-rinsed water was obtained from Kajang (3°07'38.0"N 101°51'83.0"E). After the fermentation, the eco-enzymes solutions were acidic with a pH range of 4.1-5.24, which could be due to the metabolization of carbohydrates into volatile and organic acids. The effectiveness of the eco-enzyme treatments was assessed via measuring Ca2+, Na+, K+, NO3- and pH. It was found that the fruit-produced eco-enzyme was effective in reducing NO3-, in all three water samples. But both the fruit-produced eco-enzyme and vegetable-produced eco-enzyme were not effective in reducing the concentration of Ca2+, Na+ and K+. Further improvements that can be done are the prolonging of treatment duration from five days to 30 days. Other than that, experimentation with different concentrations to reduce the introduction of excess metal ions into the treated water samples.

Solid Waste Management in Indian Himalayan Region: Current Scenario, Resource Recovery, and Way Forward for Sustainable Development

With the growing population, solid waste management (SWM) is becoming a significant environmental challenge and an emerging issue, especially in the eco-sensitive Indian Himalayan region (IHR). Though IHR does not host high local inhabitants, growing tourist footfall in the IHR increases solid wastes significantly. The lack of appropriate SWM facilities has posed a serious threat to the mountain-dwelling communities. SWM is challenging in the highlands due to the remoteness, topographical configuration, increasing urbanization, and harsh climate compared to plain areas. Difficulty in managing SWM has led to improper disposal methods, like open dumping and open burning of waste, that are adversely affecting the fragile IHR ecosystem. Open dumping of unsegregated waste pollutes the freshwater streams, and burning releases major pollutants often linked to the glacier melt. Processes like composting, vermicomposting, and anaerobic digestion to treat biodegradable wastes are inefficient due to the regions' extreme cold conditions. IHR specific SWM rules were revised in 2016 to deal with the rising problem of SWM, providing detailed criteria for setting up solid waste treatment facilities and promoting waste-to-energy (WtE). Despite governments' effort to revise SWM; measures like proper collection, segregation, treatment, and solid waste disposal needs more attention in the IHR. Door-to-door collection, segregation at source, covered transportation, proper treatment, and disposal are the primary steps to resource recovery across the IHR. Approaches such as waste recycling, composting, anaerobic digestion, refuse-derived fuel (RDF), and gas recovery from landfills are essential for waste alteration into valuable products initiatives like 'ban on single-use plastic' and 'polluters to pay' have a potential role in proper SWM in the IHR. Research and technology, capacity building, mass awareness programs, and initiatives like ‘ban on single-use plastic’ and ‘polluters to pay’ have a potential role in proper SWM in the IHR. This review highlights the current status of waste generation, the current SWM practices, and SWM challenges in the IHR. The review also discusses the possible resource recovery from waste in the IHR, corrective measures introduced by the government specific to IHR and, the way forward for improved SWM for achieving sustainable development of the IHR.
