“…The effective use of case studies for deepening understanding of diversity topics has been well documented in recent decades. , As an example, the Flint, Michigan water crisis has been employed in several courses and learning seminars to help students think about white supremacy as an economic and political system, and structural racism as a manifestation of that system. , However, courses in the physical sciences often struggle to integrate concepts of diversity directly within the curriculum. Further, there is limited published work describing pedagogical methods for addressing power and equity within traditional content-focused chemistry curricula. , This case study aims to center the concepts of a traditional analytical chemistry course directly within the broader social and political framework in which the chemical problems naturally exist. It is in this way that chemistry students are introduced to the larger socioeconomic and racialized structure that undergirds many fundamental problems in science.…”

“…To “re-engage the disengaged”, activities used in chemistry courses could be adapted to courses in the social sciences and humanities that include the environment as part of understanding communities. An example is a report of a collaboration of chemistry and political science faculty to support interdisciplinary research teams in the examination of airborne polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in different communities . Such connections could also be the basis for implementing systems thinking in chemistry, where the environment is often the setting to develop important chemical principles in a complex setting .…”

“…In other work, an upper-level chemistry seminar was used as a vehicle to introduce relevant topics such as Chemists Without Borders, Racism in Academics, Chemistry for Social Justice, and the Orphan Drug Act in other work . Overall, there are few examples of social-justice-infused chemistry courses that are directly applicable to underrepresented groups. As educators at a Historically Black College and University (HBCU), we sought to develop culturally responsive course material to stress the impact of chemistry on addressing societal issues to our marginalized students.…”
