“…Administering a fast standard CPR or even just hands-only-CPR in victims older than 12 years of age before a medical team arrives can improve the chances of survival up to 10 percent. Automated external defibrillators (AEDs) contribute to standard CPR and also demonstrated a more excellent survival from out-of-hospital SCAs even with AED-only approach without performing CPR (12). Contribution of an AED to CPR procedure within 1–2 minutes increases survival rate up to 60% (13).…”

“…Therefore, all volunteers are instructed to access and turn on a nearby AED, relegating cardiopulmonary resuscitation to a secondary role. The rationale of this approach is that it vastly simplifies the response, focusing on the single item most likely to save a life, that is, shockable ventricular fibrillation 15. Although overlooking chest compressions in the resuscitation process is controversial, the results of this study provide further evidence that early defibrillation can achieve an excellent rate of survival after SCA, even when non-medical responders perform it.…”

“…In addition, in 1999 Piacenza Progetto Vita (PPV) was set up to enable rapid defibrillation. The aim and background of PPV have been previously described 15. In brief, PPV works mainly through three approaches: (1) By increasing the common awareness on the issue of SCA in the population through educational programmes; (2) By training lay volunteers to perform only early defibrillation through quick AED use.…”

“…One possible drawback of AV‐feedback could be that voice prompts and visual indicators add noise and may distract the CPR provider, thereby prolonging time to defibrillation. Capucci et al29 recently reported a beneficial effect on survival when laymen applied an AED in OHCA without performing any other CPR, thereby shortening time to first shock. Considering our results, it can be discussed whether the AV‐feedback can be omitted to avoid disturbing elements for CPR providers who are not professionals as the key issues are rapid CPR and defibrillation if the rhythm is shockable.…”
