Impact of marine protected areas on economical important coral reef fish communities: An evaluation of the biological monitoring of coral reef fish in Anambas Islands, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 22: 4169-4181. The use of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) is the core strategy to reduce the impact of the anthropogenic stressor on marine fisheries, especially in reducing the overexploitation of fisheries resources and destructive fishing in which this plays a significant role in the conservation of marine biodiversity and populations. We conducted a study over 4 years to evaluate and assess the impact of MPAs on economically important reef fish in the Anambas Islands. We compared density, size, biomass, and diversity indices from the seven families of coral reef fish (Acanthuridae, Haemulidae, Lethrinidae, Lutjanidae, Scaridae, Siganidae, and Serranidae) using Underwater Visual Census (UVC) with a total of 12 MPAs stations (70-m transect). Multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) was used to evaluate and assess reserve protection on the coral reef fish, and several ecological indices were used to compare the potential change of economically coral reef fish diversity. We also measured the rate of change in coral cover to identify the effectiveness of the MPAs. After 4 years of studies, our result showed that there was an increase of economical reefs. Fish diversity, density, and biomass increased by 244%, 257%, and 179% respectively. There was no significant difference in the rate of coral cover change among MPAs stations. Economical coral reef fish in Anambas Islands were restored in marine reserve overtimes after fisheries restriction protection, but this does not change the rate of coral cover through time. In addition, the government managed and increased community awareness that significantly influenced decreasing destructive fishing practices and overexploited reef fish species in Anambas Islands but no change in coral cover. The MPAs environmental condition and natural disturbance, including thermal stress and high sedimentation, play a key role in coral cover recovery besides fisheries restriction in the MPAs area.

This article contains the data on fish biomass inside and outside 57 locally managed marine protected areas (MPAs) and within the nationally protected Tubbataha Reef National Marine Park (TRNMP) from 57 coastal municipalities and 20 provinces in the Philippines. It includes the seven major commercially important coral reef fishes, namely, the surgeonfish (family Acanthuridae), parrotfish (subfamily Scarinae, family Labridae), snappers (family Lutjanidae), groupers (subfamily Epinephelinae, family Serranidae), goatfish (family Mullidae), sweetlips (family Haemulidae) and emperor (family Lethrinidae). Fish visual census (FVC) surveys were done by scuba diving along 10 m × 50 m belt transects established on upper reef slope, mostly with depths ranging from 5 to 10 m. Four to twelve transects were surveyed for the locally managed MPAs, half of which were established inside MPAs and the other half outside MPAs. Thirty-three transects were surveyed for the TRNMP. FVC was performed by swimming slowly and stopping every 5 m to record all the fish within a 10 m - wide belt. All FVC surveys were conducted from 2006 to 2014 between 9:00–16:00 hours. Each fish was identified to the species level and total length (TL) was estimated to the nearest centimeter. Fish biomass was estimated using the relationship between length (L) and weight (W) with the equation W = aL b . The data we provide can be used for coral reef fisheries management and for monitoring and evaluation of coral reef fishes in the Philippines particularly for the MPAs included in this dataset. These data support the information presented in the article Muallil et al., 2019.

Understanding on fish diversity is essential for fish stock conservation specifically in Tambelan Keywords: demersal, abundance, diversity, equitability, Tambelan ABSTRAKPemahaman mengenai keragaman ikan penting bagi upaya konservasi stok ikan khususnya di perairan pulau Tambelan yang memiliki keragaman ikan yang tinggi. Penelitian ini dilakukan pada bulan Novermber 2010 di 6 lokasi pengambilan contoh sekitar pulau Tambelan. Sampel diambil dengan menggunakan alat tangkap trawl dasar yang dioperasikan dengan teknik penyapuan. Data yang akan kumpulkan yaitu jenis ikan, jumlah, panjang total (TL), dan berat total (TW). Analisis data mencakup kepadatan stok, kekayaan jenis, keseragaman jenis, dan kemiripan jenis antara lokasi sampling. Jumlah ikan yang diperoleh sebanyak 1.224 individu, yang terdiri dari 105 spesies dan 44 famili. Berat total sampel 55,3 kg, dengan kepadatan stok rata-rata sebesar 0,27 kg/jam. Komposisi ikan tangkap yaitu famili Apogonidae 11,4%, famili Mulliidae 35,7%, famili Nemipteridae 16,3% dan Lutjanidae 7,7%. Nilai indek kekayaan ikan antara 1,862 -3,121, indeks keseragaman antara 0,329 -0,576. Similaritas stasiun 3 dan 6 pada level pada 33,89%, stasiun 1, 4, dan 5 pada 20,31%, dan stasiun 4 dan 5 pada 45,30% dari nilai maksimum 100%.
