Abstract: We present a theoretical discussion conceptualizing “community as story”—narratives that create and recreate one’s definition of and relationship to their community. “…Accordingly, the term 'community' refers to the attributions of a group of people included in the narrative of the community. This narrative is not constant, it can be further reshaped and redefined (Cope et al, 2019, see also Moezzi et al, 2017). Research in the context of community building and public engagement points out how important NoC are for communities to agree on common goals, values, and reasoning (Berendse et al, 2006;Chivers & Yates, 2010;Cope et al, 2019;Milojević & Inayatullah, 2015;Wittmayer et al, 2019), through which they may be engaged in building a common future vision (da Cunha et al, 2020;Wittmayer et al, 2019).…”

“…(Gussow et al, 1997;Brady et al, 2018;Cope et al, 2019;Parkinson, 2020). The individual person's emotional sense of place adds to the distinctive formation of the community narrative in a given place (Cope et al, 2019). Sense of place can also be explained using the theory of "simultaneous perception" (Hiss, 1990;Mace, 2018), an idea similarly echoed by Tullis (2020),…”

“…Kasarda and Janowitz (1974) assert that community is a complex system of social ties rooted in socialization, an experienced phenomenon “unique to human interpretation” (Brown et al 1998:187). Brown et al (1998:187) agree that community is an experience “historically bound” and “dependent on place,” where communities happen for those who live there (Cope et al 2019).…”

“…Community has been described as a place where individuals live in proximity to one another and share a sense of connection (Brown et al 1998; Cope et al 2019; Hoffman and Eveland Jr. 2010). Two prominent ways in which scholars investigate how individuals experience their local community are through levels of community attachment and satisfaction, which together comprise community experience.…”
