The paper debates the results achieved in the Sanità district of Naples within the funded research project Play_ACT by the Department of Architecture, University of Naples Federico II. The research investigates community engagement processes in built heritage design for repurposing. Based on a mixed deductive and inductive approach, this paper frames the built heritage in the following ways: (a) a record of historical development and way of life, a linking capital between community and context; (b) the enabler of community engagement, representative of creative skills and work of humankind; and (c) a driving force for growth. The paper analyses several community-driven repurposing practices experienced within European programs. Supported by the ISO 37104: 2019 and UNI 11151-1: 2005 standards, the paper focuses on the replicability of community engagement in built heritage repurposing processes, outlining the commonalities in terms of strategies, actions, and actors involved in: (1) discovery; (2) negotiation; and (3) sharing. Focusing on the Sanità district of Naples, the research experiences the sustainability of community-led repurposing, observing long-lasting spillover effects on the physical, economic, cultural, and social subsystems. Finally, with the support of a heritage case study, Cristallini 73, future key challenges for a durable and inclusive community engagement are outlined: A activation of collaborative networks; B promotion of inclusive dynamics of long-life learning; and C creation of cultural and creative industries.

Preserving architectural and urban heritage has become a human obligation that contributes to preserving historical landmarks for future generations. Heritage plays a crucial role in shaping nations' collective memory, civilization, and local culture. The preservation of architectural and urban heritage is no longer merely a cultural and civilizing act; it also has economic and social consequences. It is an authentic expression of a society's culture and achievements and one of its pillars. In the face of changing times and globalization, it also serves as a pillar of civilization and identity and supports community values. In addition, it contributes positively to the building and community development movement and the growth of economic dimensions, as this heritage represents a national treasure not only at the local level but also on a global scale. Therefore, preserving and investing in this heritage is regarded as one of the essential economic principles. In an era in which the tourism industry is regarded as one of the critical industries, architectural and urban heritage is regarded as one of the most significant elements of attraction for global and local tourism. This research deals with the experience of preserving the architectural and urban heritage of the West Suhail village as a case study, which is one of the key Nubian civilization and cultural centers in southern Egypt. This research aims primarily to create an integrated framework INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF MULTIDISCIPLINARY STUDIES IN ARCHITECTURE ANDCULTURAL HERITAGE VOLUME 6, ISSUE 1, 2023, 1-24.2 to maximize the benefits of this civilizational and cultural heritage and not limit the process of preserving the state's role and its various bodies. The research concludes by highlighting the importance of preserving urban heritage and how to utilize it in creating new job opportunities for young people and preserving urban cultural heritage with an emphasis on the role of people's participation in this area.

The adaptive reuse of cultural heritage assets is often problematic. What emerges is the urgency of a thoughtful negotiation between built forms and emerging needs and requests. In this view, a fruitful trajectory of development arises in commoning heritage by means of adaptive reuse. Hence, the purpose of this article is to investigate how community-led adaptive heritage re-use practices contribute to social innovation in terms of new successful model of urban governance, by providing a specific focus on innovative aspects that emerge in both heritage and planning sectors. Therefore, it also aims to improve the knowledge in the innovative power of heritage when conceptualized as performative practice. To this end, the paper presents the adaptation process of a former church complex located in Naples, today Scugnizzo Liberato, one of the bottom-up initiatives recognized by the Municipality of Naples as part of the urban commons network of the city. The research results are based on desk research, a literature review, and interviews with experts and activists, conducted as part of the OpenHeritage project (Horizon 2020). Initial evidence shows that profound citizen involvement throughout the whole heritage-making process might generate innovative perspectives in urban governance as well as conservation planning practice.
