Communities and urban energy landscapes in Maputo, Mozambique

Abstract: What is the role of energy in building communities and to what extent are communities invested in particular energy practices? The hypothesis of this paper is that energy is embedded in the everyday life of urban communities in multiple ways. The assemblage of shared understandings within the community and the material elements that mediate the provision of energy and its use constitute an urban energy landscape. While this energy landscape is embedded in wider political economies, communities also shape it bo… Show more

“…The mix of determinants affecting low income communities called for diverse actions to produce change, even for more focused issues. Measures to produce social improvements were linked in some initiatives to measures for local employment and incomes, supported by affordable technology and training and organisation of new roles; and by various forms of funding to catalyse these opportunities ( Table 3 ) ( 2 , 27 , 37 , 38 , 47 ). “…An important distinction in energy landscape studies was put forward by Castán Broto and co‐authors. They focus on urban energy landscapes to analyze how different modes of energy use shape the built environment of cities (Castán Broto et al ., 2014; Castán Broto, 2017). The energy‐use practices that form the built environment of cities mirror cultural life and governance structures (Castán Broto, 2019).…”

“…It is also explained by the success of the electronic prepayment system "Credelec", which became widely used in the city post-2004 (Baptista, 2015). Generally, evidence suggests that residents view Credelec favorably as it offers convenience, flexibility, and transparency in how people pay for and use electricity (Baptista, 2015;Castán Broto et al, 2014). Today, Credelec is supported by a network of both physical (digital meters, credit sellers, ATMs) and virtual (e.g.…”
