Diversity of News Consumption in a Digital Information Environment

This dissertation examines the impact of a digital information environment on media diversity and the types of political news people consume. The study is based on four sub-studies, two of which focus on methodological and conceptual challenges faced by researchers in studying media diversity in the digital environment. In Chapter 2, a systematic literature review of over 200 academic articles was conducted to identify gaps in existing research, revealing that most studies on media diversity rely on outdated ideas from an era dominated by mass media, and do not consider the impact of personalization and fragmentation. Chapter 3 provides an overview of the challenges associated with collecting digital traces for research purposes, including data access, privacy, and usability of data collection tools. The chapter offers recommendations on how researchers can collect data from multiple platforms and devices to improve their studies. Chapter 4 and 5 examine the impact of fragmentation and personalization on news diversity. The main findings of these studies show that fragmentation leads to less diverse news consumption, whereas personalization leads to more niche and diverse consumption. Overall, the dissertation concludes that the digital environment has fundamentally changed the way people engage with news and that media diversity research needs to evolve to reflect these changes, considering aspects such as personalization and fragmentation.

How to study media diversity has become a major concern in today's media landscape. Many expect that algorithmic filtering and a shift of audiences from legacy media to new intermediaries decrease the diversity of news diets, leading to fragmented societies, polarization and spread of misinformation. Different fields, from journalism research to law and computer science, are involved in the study of media diversity. They operate, however, with vastly different vocabularies, frameworks, and measurements. To overcome this fragmentation, this study provides an extensive overview of conceptualizations and operationalizations of media diversity in different fields using a systematic literature review (1999-2018). This showed a lack of theorizing and linking of conceptual with empirical work in media diversity research. Based on this, we develop a framework on how to move forward: Regarding conceptualization, we call for focusing on different places in the journalistic information chain instead of the classical exposure-supply distinction. Methodologically, automated approaches (e.g., analyzing digital traces) and qualitative approaches (e.g., capturing perceptions of diversity) should receive more attention. For analysis, matters of balance and disparity need to be stressed more, especially discussing possible limits to diversity. Overall, research into media diversity thus needs to be addressed in interdisciplinary collaboration.

Resumen: La televisión pública en Europa pierde peso e influencia en las políticas de comunicación de esta segunda década del siglo XXI, en sus propios medios de financiación, en la lucha por las audiencias y en los sistemas tecnológicos de difusión frente a los nuevos modelos híbridos y convergentes abanderados por los operadores de cable, de satélite y de la distribución por Internet (IPTV). Frente a la fragmentación de audiencias y al debilitamiento de los modelos de financiación tradicionales (publicidad, canon, subvención), las televisiones concentran sus estrategias de difusión en las economías de escala y de club a través de duopolios o plataformas integradas de mercado.Palabras clave: políticas de comunicación; Agenda Digital Europea; Directiva de Servicios de Medios Audiovisuales; concentración; pluralismo; TV pública. Abstract: Europe's public service television is losing strength and influence in the communication policies of the second decade of the 21 st century, in its own financing means, in the fight for audiences and in the broadcasting technologies against the new hybrid and convergent TV models led by the operators of cable, satellite and internet TV. To cope with the fragmentation of the audiences and the weakening of the traditional financing models (advertising, fees, subsidies), television companies concentrate their dissemination strategies in the scale and club economies through duopolies and integrated market platforms.
