Communication mechanism of the discrete event simulation and the mechanical project softwares for manufacturing systems

Abstract: This paper presents an integration mechanism for online communication between a discrete event simulation (DES) software and a system dynamics (SD) software. The integration between them allowed executing a hybrid and broader simulation, in which the complexity of the systems and their multi-faceted relationships may demand the combination of different simulation methods and the synergies between the techniques. The Ururau free and open-source software (FOSS) was applied to implement the DES model. In order to… Show more

“…Some researchers also reported monitoring systems for machine tools using IoT devices [26,54]. Moreover, the average cost of IoT devices is falling, and the recent trend towards free or open-source software allows for the development of a system that does not rely on proprietary and expensive commercial software [55,56]. At this point, Advanced ICT could be an alternative to reduce the entry barriers of adopting ICT systems on SME’ shop floors if they can be appropriately introduced and integrated on the shop floors.…”

“…The principles interoperability (P5) is explored by different approaches, such as ABMS, HS, DT, and VC models. Laurindo et al (2019) proposed an integration mechanism for HS or VC approach, by allowing online communication and highlevel data exchange between DES and the dynamic system simulation software. From the authors, the integration between the DES model and the control system enables the validation of PLC logic and other different operational aspects of a production system.…”

“…A DES model enables the analysis of the dynamic of the stochastic system. Also, it can verify the functioning of a new element in the process and allow for evaluating both the operations and resources of the system and the mechanical efforts of a new device inserted in the plant of a process [27]. In DES, the state of the system changes only during specific time instants, which defined as the events.…”
