Communication Infrastructures for Distributed Control of Power Distribution Networks

Abstract: Abstract-Power distribution networks with distributed generators (DGs) can exhibit complex operational regimes which makes conventional management approaches no longer adequate. This paper looks into key communication infrastructure design aspects, and analyzes two representative evolution cases of Active Network Management (ANM) for distributed control. Relevant standard initiatives, communication protocols and technologies are introduced and underlying engineering challenges are highlighted. By analyzing two… Show more

“…Another issue that is central in enabling the SOA solutions for the Smart Grid is of course an appropriate communication infrastructure. It is not the focus of the present work, but it is worth to mentioning the adaptation required by the telecommunication/telecontrol infrastructure to support the enhanced amount of information data and control signaling that the Smart Grid requires [54]. The telecommunication aspects and its infrastructure must not be taken for granted, since they found the basis to build more complex service-oriented software layers on top.…”

“…In addition, these controllers are prone to modeling errors and need a high-bandwidth communication structure with miscellaneous links [18]. Moreover, the reliability of the system is easily vulnerable to the single-point of failure [19]. Recently, the topology of power grids and communication networks are getting time-varying and extensible, but heuristic algorithms suffer a great challenge in meeting the changes.…”

“…At present, the optimization decision process of VPPs is changing from centralized ways to distributed ones [13]. According to the local communication mechanism, the operation information of the DERs is collected through communication lines built among DER units and their adjacent units, and then the real-time scheduling process can be carried out.…”
