Financial crimes have become dominant in the contemporary business environment. It is one of the most serious crimes endangering a country's national security and public safety. It is directly associated with legal, social, human rights, political and development issues. This research identifies the causal factors of the professional traits of forensic investigators in investigation process expeditions based on Malaysian evidence. Data for this study is collected through a questionnaire survey. A sample was driven from two enforcement agencies in Malaysia: National Audit Department (NAD) and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC). A total of 83 questionnaires were distributed, collected and usable. Statistical techniques such as descriptive statistics, correlation, and regression analysis were used to analyze the data. Three hypotheses were developed, and the findings reveal a significant relationship between investigative technique and knowledge of forensic investigators and investigation process expedition. In contrast, the skills of forensic investigators show an insignificant relationship with the investigation process expedition. Issues on process expeditions are significant as the disruption in the process expedition will delay the case solving. Hence, this research provides insights into the forensic investigations process which would be useful for the Malaysian government to incite interest in forensic accounting for monitoring and investigation of suspected financial crime cases.

Enhancing forensic science communication through the jigsaw method

Traditional didactic approaches often fall short in preparing students for real-world minutiae, such as scientific communication. After the pandemic, it is evident students are struggling with communication skills. However, the vital skill of communication is still pertinent in academia and the workplace. This study uses the jigsaw teaching method, inspired by the jigsaw puzzle concept, to enhance communication by organizing students into groups responsible for mastering specific aspects of a case study. Despite the jigsaw methods effectiveness in various educational settings, the integration of the method into the subject of forensic science, particularly in dissecting case studies, remains underexplored. In the study, a total of 86 forensic science students across three years of study were asked for feedback (using the Likert Scale) after studying a case using the jigsaw methodology. The students indicated a positive response overall, with an average rating of 4.01 out of 5 for the six questions asked based on improvement of their skills. Notably, students demonstrated better understanding of communication in forensic science, and acknowledged the method's contribution to improving peer communication in forensic science (average rating 4.09). Student comments highlight a generally positive experience, though concerns about group dynamics and engagement surfaced. Ultimately, the Jigsaw teaching method holds promise for elevating the quality of forensic science communication in the face of evolving challenges around student engagement. Incorporating the methodology into an assessment-based practice could be the way forward to help students overcome anxiety-inducing assessments, such as traditional oral presentations, as smaller groups are used within this methodology.

The call for transparency with regards to the disclosure of errors in forensic science has permeated dialogues within the field, the legal arena and the public domain. While the challenges of meeting this need have been debated, no consistently accepted approach to recording or disclosing critical issues in forensic science has been developed. Part of the solution may lie in the quality system structures already present in forensic service providers world‐wide. However, while quality systems themselves may be standardized, the language used within them is not. We argue that the development of a common language for quality issues in forensic science may provide the key to unlocking this crucial information to support collaboration, continuous improvement, and the fundamental understanding of “error” in forensic science.
