Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of the types of computer and technology applications used in the field of communication disorders. The introduction outlines the range of communication disorders for which technology has been applied. The main body of the article highlights current ways in which computer technology has been applied for administration, analysis of typical function, assessment, intervention, and assistive devices. Within each section, applications are discussed for speech, hearing, and language disorders. Each section concludes with benefits and limitations of computer technology for the type of application discussed. A final section outlines directions of future research and development in the areas of speech, hearing, language, and assistive devices.
