The relationship between creative writing and mental wellbeing Is the subject of much debate and Is often founded on conjecture and supposition. The aim of this small study was to explore the relationship between creative writing and mental wellbeing, with the cooperation of 14 adults who had all been users of mental health services and were Involved In a creative writing group in the community. Qualitative data were collected from an interview (with the group facilitator), observation (of the group over a period of four group sessions) and the nominal group technique (to elicit the beliefs and opinions of the group itself).The findings of the study were two-fold. Firstly, there was a tension between the cathartic expression of thoughts and feelings and the production of quality writings and, secondly, the notion of stlgmatisatlon as a result of being a user of mental health services emerged. This explorative study, .carried out in an urban Scottish context, Indicated a covert relationship between creative writing as a product (rhyme) and its therapeutic by-prodUcts which affect an Individual's mental wellbeing (reason).Creativity is not compromised by clarity. Rigour and discipline apply to both art and science (Mazza, 1993, p52l.

This paper will inform mental health service users and carers on how a University in Wales established a service user and carer-led research group. * The group's primary aim will be to undertake its own service user and carer-led research projects. * Mental health service users have undergone empowerment and research training at a University in Wales. This is an important initiative because it is the first service user and carer-led research group in Wales. * This paper is co-authored by a mental health service user and includes transcripts of service users' stories written in their words. Abstract Service user and carer involvement in research has been gaining momentum in recent years. However, this involvement to date has primarily been as research respondents or 'subjects' in research studies. A group of mental health service users at a University in Wales underwent empowerment and research training to enable them to become active participants in the research process; this training was a necessary step to equip mental health service users with the skills to become independent researchers and to carry out service user-led research. We included transcripts from mental health service users on their views of the empowerment and research training received. We are not reporting, in this paper, on the findings from a research study rather it aims to inform readers how a service user and carer-led research group has been established in Wales. The group has two purposes: (1) to train service users in research methodologies, and thus for them to gain essential research skills; and (2) to undertake their own service user and carer-led research projects thereby implementing the research skills they have acquired from the training. The latter is a primary aim of the group; a future paper will report on its development.

This article explores the congruence between poetry therapy and the strengths perspective of social work. It demonstrates the ways in which poetry therapy is consistent with the strengths perspective and discusses methods for its utilization in direct practice settings. Case examples are provided to help the practitioner learn how to utilize poetry therapy with clients from diverse backgrounds. As a tool in strengths-based practice, poetry and poetry therapy can help empower clients and help to focus practitioners on clients’ capacities and resilencies. This article seeks to expand upon the growing literature of strengths-based social work, addressing how the theory can be applied to clinical practice situations.
