Communicating Cysts and Diverticula of the Renal Pelvis

Abstract: CYSTS communicating with the renal calyces were first described by Rayer (1841), who called them " cystes urinaires ". Since then the various names given them-calyceal cyst, calyceal diverticulum, megacalycosis, and hydrocalycosis-all signify variations on the same theme (Fig. 1). FIG. 1 Communicating cysts and diverticula of the renal pelvis showing their variations with their alternative names.

“…Pyelocalyceal cysts and diverticula are usually asymptomatic and require no further treatment, but they can become complicated or symptomatic requiring surgical treatment, which may involve a nephrectomy, hemi or partial nephrectomy, deroofing of the cyst [16] or endoscopic marsupialization with or without fulguration [9, 17]. …”

“…Although many of these cavities occur without symptoms, they can be associated with pain, hematuria, recurrent urinary tract infections, and even damage to surrounding parenchyma. 2,4,6,7 Furthermore, complete obstruction of the diverticular neck can be associated with sepsis, abscess formation, or hypertension. 8 The etiology of caliceal diverticular calculi is controversial, with both urinary stasis and underlying metabolic abnormalities implicated as factors.…”
