Common Trends and Differences in Antioxidant Activity Analysis of Phenolic Substances Using Single Electron Transfer Based Assays

Abstract: Numerous assays were developed to measure the antioxidant activity, but each has limitations and the results obtained by different methods are not always comparable. Popular examples are the DPPH and ABTS assay. Our aim was to study similarities and differences of these two assay regarding the measured antioxidant potentials of 24 phenolic compounds using the same measurement and evaluation methods. This should allow conclusions to be drawn as to whether one of the assays is more suitable for measuring specifi… Show more

“…In addition to low-molecular compounds such as phenolic acids, there are several, more complex representatives including the group of flavonoids ( 9 , 10 ). The strength of the antioxidant effect of these compounds has been described in numerous publications and depends on their structural properties, such as the Bors criteria ( Figure 1 ) ( 11 14 ).…”

“…A 20 wt% tocopherol content in fibers lead to total quenching of DPPH but only to 15.5% for ABTS radical. ABTS was much less affected, due to the different mechanism of action with the cation radical in hydrophobic media [ 56 ].…”

“…Atalayin et al [13], reported that RS reduced DNA damage and reactive oxygen species (ROS) produced by different dental resin-adhesive systems. Platzer et al [27] reported significant antioxidant activity of PY associated with its structure and number of OH groups. Our study showed that resveratrol has good biocompatibility when it is incorporated into an epoxy-resin endodontic sealer, whilst PY can exert a cytotoxic effect on fibroblasts (NIH3T3).…”
