Common-Property Resource Exploitation: A Real Options Approach

Abstract: Agricultural land and forestlands can have multiple uses and generate multiple sources of utility. Although landowners benefit from most of them, society can benefit from others because of their intrinsic characteristics as common-property resources and customary practice. In many Italian territories, the picking of mushrooms is allowed on privately owned agricultural land and in forests. The management of these resources is challenging due to the emerging conflicts between landowners and users. In addition, t… Show more

“…The present value of collective domains in the Campania region can be better understood through a study by D'Alpaos et al [50]. They interpreted the historical vicissitudes of collective domains throughout the country by analyzing the relationship between the evolution of land productivity and the degree of socioeconomic development.…”

“…Several innovative approaches have emerged for managing cost overrun including structural equation modeling, Monte Carlo simulation, decision support system tools, and the use of multi-criteria decision model techniques [13][14][15][16][17][18]. Recent publications have extensively explored the applications of artificial-intelligence-based models to effectively manage complex, uncertain, and vulnerable cost-risk correlations [19][20][21][22][23][24][25]. On this topic, an important and substantial contribution to research was made by Flyvbjerg, who introduced the concept of reference class forecasting (RCF) as an alternative to traditional methods of cost estimation.…”

“…In recent years, many scholars have begun to differentiate among the diverse configurations of communal ownerships. Most contemporary models of common property explain it as an asset over which a discrete group of people shares ownership rights and exerts exclusionary power (D'Alpaos et al, 2023;Peredo et al, 2018;Sugden & Punch, 2014). Rather than being a prototype of private or common land ownership, incremental iterations of China's HRS reveal a complex ownership system in which private and communal characteristics interact to allow for unexpected outcomes.…”
