ResumoEstudos referentes á criptosporidiose são essenciais, devido sua relevância em saúde pública e por sua patogenicidade em animais de produção e de companhia. Nos últimos 20 anos, houve uma rápida expansão das pesquisas envolvendo o gênero Cryptosporidium, em grande parte relacionada a estudos moleculares, propiciando a descrição de várias espécies, genótipos e subtipos do parasito. A caracterização molecular de isolados de diferentes origens (animal, humana e ambiental) tem sido amplamente usada com o intuito de investigar o potencial zoonótico deste protozoário. As formas de transmissão documentadas são de animais para o ser humano, de pessoa para pessoa, por meio de ingestão ou do uso de água destinada a lazer contaminada direta ou indiretamente com oocistos esporulados. A elevada taxa de animais naturalmente infectados e a susceptibilidade ao protozoário justificam a importância de se atentar para a ocorrência desta enfermidade. Assim, são demonstrados aspectos epidemiológicos desta zoonose em animais domésticos. Water buffalo is an indispensable livestock in Asia and other countries due to its high meat and milk quality, aside from draft power source. It adapts well to tropical climate and has significant contribution to the livestock industry, provided with improved breeding and good animal husbandry practices. Infectious diseases are hindrance to good reproductive performance of livestock, resulting in huge economic loss. In addition, most of these diseases are zoonotic, posing serious threats on human health. However, its degree of severity varies in each region and is often overlooked. This chapter reviews the common and current updates on emerging bacterial, viral, protozoal, fungal and endoparasitic pathogens that infect water buffaloes worldwide. All of the diseases directly affect the animals' health condition except for schistosomiasis where water buffalo played an important role as shedder of infection to humans. Leptospirosis, brucellosis, Bovine Tb, BVDV and fasciolosis have projected economic impact to water buffalo industry as well as its effect as zoonoses. However, the data seem underquantified since most are neglected diseases and are highly prevalent in developing countries. Further studies are needed particularly in countries where water buffalo is the major livestock than cattle to fully utilize the potential of the animal.

A molecular epidemiological survey of Cryptosporidium from water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) in the Northern Territory in Australia was conducted. Fecal samples were collected from adult farmed (n = 50) and wild buffalo (n = 50) and screened using an 18S quantitative PCR (qPCR). Positives were typed by sequence analysis of 18S nested PCR products. The qPCR prevalence of Cryptosporidium species in farmed and wild buffalo was 30 and 12 %, respectively. Sequence analysis identified two species: C. parvum and C. bovis, with C. parvum accounting for ~80 % of positives typed from the farmed buffalo fecal samples compared to 50 % for wild buffalo. Subtyping at the 60 kDa glycoprotein (gp60) locus identified C. parvum subtypes IIdA19G1 (n = 4) and IIdA15G1 (n = 1) in the farmed buffalo and IIaA18G3R1 (n = 2) in the wild buffalo. The presence of C. parvum, which commonly infects humans, suggests that water buffaloes may contribute to contamination of rivers and waterways with human infectious Cryptosporidium oocysts, and further research on the epidemiology of Cryptosporidium in buffalo populations in Australia is required.
