Common data elements (CDEs) for preclinical epilepsy research: Introduction to CDEs and description of core CDEs. A TASK3 report of the ILAE/AES joint translational task force

Abstract: SummaryCommon data elements (CDEs) are becoming more common as more areas of preclinical research have generated CDEs. Herein we provide an overview of the progress to date in generating CDEs for preclinical epilepsy research. Currently there are CDEs that have been developed for Physiology (in vivo), Behavior, Pharmacology, and Electroencephalography (EEG). Together the CDEs and methodologic considerations associated with these CDEs are laid out in consecutive manuscripts published in Epilepsia Open, each des… Show more

“…Table provides a nonexhaustive list of preclinical Common Data Elements (CDEs) for reporting general experimental settings, common to all neurobehavioral tests. These CDEs are invariably used in conjunction with Core CDEs, which include individual animal data (e.g., species, strain, date of birth, sex, and source), and on demand, with other relevant CDEs (e.g., Pharmacology, Physiology, and EEG), depending on the experimental goals.…”

“…For other information except EEG recording and scoring, such as rodent species, animal characteristics, model type, physiologic monitoring, pharmacologic study design, and behavioral scoring other than seizures, the TASK3 group has created separate sets of CDEs and CRFs that investigators may use as needed based on the study design. For example, to describe the animal characteristics, one may use the core CDEs …”

“…The Core CDEs refer to data that are collected for virtually all experiments in preclinical epilepsy. In contrast, for any given study, the CDEs for Behavior, for example, may not be used because behavioral assays might not be part of the specific study.…”
