Common Carotid Artery Intima-Media Thickness and Intracranial Pulsatility Index in Non-ST-Elevation Acute Coronary Syndromes

Abstract: Background: Common carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) has been related to cardiovascular risk factors, coronary atherosclerosis and a higher risk of myocardial infarction. Evaluation of intracranial arteries by transcranial Doppler explores the presence of vascular dysfunction at this level. We tested the hypothesis that CIMT and Doppler Pulsatility Index (DPI) can be related to the Thrombolysis in Myocardial Infarction (TIMI) risk score for non-ST-elevation acute coronary syndrome (nST-ACS). The relation t… Show more

“…Therefore, in a representative population sample, we examined whether women with previous PE or pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH) without proteinuria have an increased carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) and a higher incidence of atherosclerotic plaques compared with women who had been healthy during pregnancy and women who had never given birth. It has previously been shown that the IMT of carotid arteries and detection of plaques are useful measures of preclinical atherosclerosis and progression of atherosclerotic disease [14,15,16,17,18,19,20]. …”
