Prior research on sustainable supply chain management (SSCM) has almost exclusively focused on environmental aspects (GSCM—green supply chain management) and the study of its external drivers and consequences. Framing our study within the “strategy‐conduct‐performance” paradigm, we consider the focal firm's role in the implementation of sustainable supply chain initiatives, social as well as environmental. We use data on the S&P 500 Index retrieved from Bloomberg, including variables for two relevant focal firm strategies: (a) reducing the environmental footprint of the supply chain and (b) reducing social risks in the supply chain (SRSS). Hierarchical logit modeling is carried out to examine the sequential impact of governance board characteristics and the focal firm's adoption of related internal policies and practices on the likelihood of implementing these initiatives along the supply chain. Controlling for industry, firm size, and resources, we find that board structure and diversity influence the implementation of sustainable supply chain initiatives by increasing organizational commitment to environmentally friendly and socially responsible policies and practices. Consequently, empirical evidence exists for the importance of strategic factors, namely a proactive corporate stance on sustainability associated with governance board characteristics, as antecedents of sustainable (environmental and social) supply chain initiatives.

Nigeria operates a petroleum-based economy but suffers refined product shortages. The continual shortages or scarcity of refined petroleum products cripples business activities, which undermines the development of the Nigerian economy. The purpose of this multiple case study was to identify the strategic role of technology application in mitigating petroleum shortages in the petroleum supply chain and to sustain business development in Nigeria. The research participants include ten senior leaders from two private-sector Nigerian downstream petroleum supply companies located in the Niger Delta region, who had successfully implemented strategies for petroleum supply. The conceptual framework for the research was the resource based view theory. Data collection was through semi structured face-to-face interviews and review of company’s operational and policy documents. Data validation was through member checking and triangulation, after transcription and analysis. The findings indicate that the oil and gas industry is technologically driven, and for efficiency and effectiveness of supply, petroleum leaders should apply required technology in all segment of the supply chain; (operations) vessel or marine, discharge operations, tank farm operations, logistics, and retail outlets, (no operations) administration, sales, safety, IT, finance, and marketing. Findings may be used by petroleum business leaders and investors to create effective and efficient technological resource management strategies in the supply chain, leading to product availability, sustainability, poverty reduction, and economic development.

Impact of Infrastructure and Production Processes on Rioja Wine Supply Chain Performance

This paper presents a structural equation model for analyzing the relationship between four latent variables: infrastructure, production processes, transport benefits, and economic benefits within the supply chain for wine from La Rioja, Spain, by incorporating 12 observed variables. The model proposes six hypothesis that were tested using information gathered from 64 surveys completed by managers of several wineries in the region. The WarpPLS v.5 ® software (Version 5.0, Script Warp Systems, Laredo, TX, USA) was used to execute the model and analyze the direct, indirect, and total effects among latent variables. The results show that the control of production processes is a direct source of economic and transport benefits because of its higher explanatory power of those variables. Similarly, infrastructure is a direct source of transport and production benefits, and some of them are given indirectly. In addition, infrastructure does not have a direct effect on economic benefits; however, there were indirect effects given through production process and transport benefits. Infrastructure is a very important variable because of its influence in the final performance, but also because of its high environmental impact. Finally, economic benefits were explained in 43.8%, 19.1% belonging to production process, 21.1% coming from transport benefits, and 3.7% from infrastructure.
