Commissioning of high current H+/D+ ion beams for the prototype accelerator of the International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility

Abstract: The Linear IFMIF (International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility) Prototype Accelerator (LIPAc) is aiming at demonstrating the low energy section of a 40 MeV/125 mA IFMIF deuteron accelerator up to 9 MeV with a full beam current in cw operation. For such a high-power beam, the LIPAc injector is required to produce a 100 keV D+ beam with 140 mA and match it for injection into the Radio Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ) accelerator. The injector is designed by CEA-Saclay based on the high intensity light ion sourc… Show more

“…In 2019, the RFQ successfully accelerated a 125 mA deuteron pulsed beam at low duty cycle (pulse width of 1 ms, 1 Hz) [2]. In this phase, the LIPAc injector fully satisfied the requirements at low duty cycle operation, achieving a total extracted current of 160 mA being matched into the RFQ with good RFQ transmission (>90%) [3]. Since then, construction of the LIPAc has progressed and beam commissioning in the current Phase B+ has started in 2021 [4].…”

“…During the commissioning of the Linear IFMIF Prototype Accelerator (LIPAc) [1], an intense study campaign focused on the injector, composed by the ECR ion source and the LEBT line [2] has been perfomed, in order to characterize the beam at the RFQ input and to reach its nominal transmission (achieved in 2019 [3]). The experiments related to the injector are described in [4,5]. The ECR (Electron Cyclotron Resonance) consists of a 2.45 GHz RF power source with two coils magnetic structure.…”
