Commercializing University Innovations: A Sense-Making Perspective to Communicate Between Academics and Industry

Abstract: Technology transfer offices (TTOs) play a key role in helping universities commercialize research and distribute knowledge. Nonetheless, there remains an incomplete understanding of the communication, which takes place between academics, industry partners, and TTO staff. The aim of this article is to examine, with the use of sense-making theory, strategies used by TTO employees as they work with academics and industry partners to commer-cialize intellectual property. In order to achieve this aim, an ethno-grap… Show more

“…Third, our empirical study uncovers the relation between structural innovation capital and IC outcomes and, therefore, contributes to Guerrero et al (2021) and Schiavone et al (2022). In contrast to Andrews et al (2021) and Narzary and Palo (2021), who presented the negative outcomes of industryuniversity partnerships, our study supports positive outcomes (efficiency, cost reduction, etc.) from IC that positively contribute to research centres' and universities' endeavours to successfully conduct their third mission.…”

“…Gulbrandsen and Smeby [57] found a significant relationship between university professors' industry funding and their research performance, with no clear positive or negative correlation between academic publishing and entrepreneurial outputs. On this basis, scholars have carried out further research on the knowledge/technology transfer behaviors of doctoral students [58], professors [59], star scientists [60], TTO staff [61] and other individuals in UIC, which has further expanded the scope of research. Furthermore, some studies also discussed ways in which faculty members can participate in university technology transfer activities and incentives for faculty members to participate in these activities [25], [28].…”

“…However, some exceptions do not represent abnormal conditions, as they are part of the normal operation of the operating system. For example, a MacOS program invokes a system call via the *sc* instruction, which causes a hardware exception [28].…”
