Abstract-A study was conducted in Mtwapa creek on the north coast Kenya, during 2005Kenya, during -2007 to evaluate the viability of pens and drive-in cages for mud crab (S. serrata) culture as a mangrove management strategy and alternative source of income for local communities. Other objectives were to assess the effectiveness of drive-in cage construction materials (fito and bamboo) in improving mud crab culture and influences return on investment. The applicability of morphomentric equations in estimating growth was also tested. Four replicate pens (6 m x 2 m) were stocked with 2 crabs/m 2 while individual drive-in cages (30 cm x 30 cm x 30 cm) were joined to form ten in one group (1 replicate) and a total of four replicates used. Uniform feeding was applied for all crabs in pens and drive-in cages using a mixture of fish offal and gastropod meat once a day at 10% body weight. Specific growth rate and survival of mud crabs were evaluated together with the cost of investment for the three months culture period. Drive-in cages recorded a significantly better survival and growth rate (53.2 ± 12.78%; 1.25 ± 0.42 g/day) compared to pens (31.25 ± 2.95%; 0.68 ± 0.24 g/day) p < 0.05 while no significant difference was observed between drive-in cages made of different materials (fito and bamboo). A link between growth rate and size of crab was observed, where growth rate decreased with increasing weight. Moulting associated factors contributed highly (45%) to the total mud crab mortality recorded (p < 0.05); mortality also had a strong positive relationship with moulting (R 2 = 0.79, p > 0.05). Strong relationships existed in morphomentric equations between carapace length and weight (W = 0.0006L 2.9941; R 2 = 0.86, p > 0.05). The construction costs for pens were three times more than those for a similar number of drive-in cages. Cost-return analysis on a per year basis/50 crabs showed that the use of either bamboo or fito as cage construction material was economically viable with a return on capital investment of 122.3 -181.7%. Therefore the integration of mud crab culture in mangrove forest is feasible in Kenya.

Abstrak: Pertambahan berat diperoleh sebesar 43,35 gram untuk kepiting yang diberi pakan buatan dan 101,88 gram untuk kepiting yang diberi pakan ikan tembang. Nilai laju pertambahan berat kepiting yang diberi pakan buatan adalah 0,036 gram/minggu dan 0,078 gram/minggu untuk kepiting yang diberi pakan ikan tembang. Untuk hubungan lama waktu pemeliharaan dengan pertambahan berat rata-rata didapatkan persamaan penduga Y=10, 09+0,299X (r=0,199434) 09+0,299X (r=0,199434) and Y=23,315+0,862X (r=0,304828), respectively, artificial feed treatment and treatment using sardine. Berkembangnya pangsa pasar kepiting bakau baik dalam maupun di luar negeri adalah suatu tantangan untuk meningkatkan produksi secara berkesinambungan.Kepiting bakau sangat digemari oleh masyarakat, baik di dalam negeri maupun mancanegara. Kepiting bakau disenangi masyarakat karena rasa dagingnya yang lezat dan nilai gizinya yang tinggi (Muskar, 2002; Tupan, dkk., 2005). Kepiting memiliki daging dan telur yang gurih dengan kandungan protein yang cukup tinggi (65,7 % dan 82,6 %) serta kandungan lemak yang relatif rendah (0,9 % dan 8,2 % bobot kering) (Motoh, 1997 dalam Tupan, dkk., 2005.Berdasarkan data yang tersedia di Departemen Kelautan dan Perikanan, permintaan kepiting dari pengusaha restoran di Amerika Serikat mencapai 450 ton setiap bulan. Jumlah tersebut belum dapat dipenuhi karena keterbatasan hasil tangkapan di alam dan produksi budidaya hanya dapat memberikan kontribusi sebesar 1 ton setiap bulan. Padahal negara yang menjadi tujuan ekspor kepiting bukan hanya Amerika Serikat, tetapi juga China, Jepang, Hongkong, Korea Selatan, Taiwan, Malaysia, dan sejumlah negara di kawasan Eropa. Kepiting tersebut diekspor dalam bentuk segar/hidup, beku, maupun dalam kaleng (Muskar, 2006).Mudjiman (2004) mengatakan bahwa pakan merupakan salah satu faktor yang penting dalam menentukan keberhasilan budidaya. Pemberian pakan yang efektif dan efisien, dalam arti jenis, jumlah dan waktu pemberian yang tepat akan menghasilkan pertumbuhan yang optimal. Dalam kondisi budidaya, kepiting bakau selain diberikan pakan rucah, juga dapat diberikan pakan buatan yang diramu sendiri (Soim, 1999; Muskar, 2006; FAO, 2006; Mann, 2005).Budidaya kepiting cenderung menghadapi masalah, yakni ukuran (berat) yang dihasilkan tidak mencapai ukuran pasar (market size). Apart from penaeid shrimp culture, crab farming and fattening and other several diversified aquaculture practices are now emerging as viable ventures in India. About 11 types of crab products are being exported from India with an average unit value realization of US$ 3.73 kg -1 , pinpointing its importance in the foreign exchange earnings. An economic evaluation of mud crab culture, fattening and fattening with composite culture of shrimp/finfish has been attempted in this paper. The major operating cost was that of seed and it was higher for crab fattening (87% of the total operating cost). Feed costs were very low compared to that of shrimp farming. Annual profit obtained was US$ 22812.5 ha -1 year -1 for culture and US$ 30820.8 ha -1 year -1 for fattening. Economic indicators such as net profit, rate of return, pay back period and breakeven price indicate that crab fattening/culture is much more profitable than any other coastal aquaculture operations currently in practice, provided hatchery production is established in the country to ensure adequate supply of mud crab seeds.
