The thirteen other patients given the drug in therapeutic amounts had no apparent untoward effects. It is suggested that Derrien's test be used in determining the presence of the agent in the urine of patients under treatment as a means of detecting intolerance to the drug, although in this case of allergy the test was of no value.The toxicity in rats of the compound used in this group of patients corresponds to the reports of pre¬ vious investigators, the average lethal dose being 40 mg. per kilogram. Toxicity work of this character, how¬ ever, is of no value in predicting the occurrence of allergic responses. It is especially to be noted that the toxic range of alpha-dinitrophenol is broad, indicating a high probability of untoward reactions at relatively low dosage. On this account, dosage in human beings must be strictly and conservatively controlled, and it is recommended that it be based on average body weight for age, sex and height of the patient. In our opinion, it is yet to be demonstrated that this drug is as safe and satisfactory for weight reduction in human beings as other methods in common use.
