Commentary on “The Anthropogenic Greenhouse Era Began Thousands of Years Ago”

Abstract: Bill Ruddiman (Climatic Change, 61, 261-293, 2003) recently suggested that early civilisations could have saved us from an ice age because land management over substantial areas caused an increase in atmospheric CO 2 concentration. Ruddiman suggests a decreasing "natural course" of the Holocene greenhouse gases concentrations and sea-level by referring to analogous situations in the past, namely the last three interglacials. An examination of marine isotopic stage 11 would perhaps make Ruddiman's argument eve… Show more

“…In one commentary, Crucifix et al (2005) noted that integration of paleoclimate so-called proxy data (Section 2.1.1) within climate models would be an important way to test early human influence. Claussen et al (2005) suggested that the three latest interglacials are not an accurate equivalent for the Holocene and concluded that a strong human forcing is not needed to explain the observed Holocene CO 2 development.…”

“…Our simulations of glacial inceptions shed new light on a debate (Claussen et al, 2005;Crucifix et al, 2005) on the overdue Holocene glaciation hypothesis by Ruddiman (2003). As response, Ruddiman (2007) mentioned that Claussen et al (2005) as well as Crucifix et al (2005) did not apply his hypothesized drop in CH 4 in addition to the CO 2 decrease.…”
