Earthquakes are defined as a "violent shaking of the Earth's crust and mantle, caused by forces acting inside the Earth". In most cases, these forces are caused by an energy release process generated from the contact of the Earth's tectonic plates. Other less common causes are the human-induced earthquakes or those generated through volcanic activity. In either case, the energy is released in the form of multi-directional waves, which reach the surface, causing different effects. However, the intensity of an earthquake is not uniform in all its propagating directions. Many times, the motion is polarized due to the type of fault and/or the proximity to it, causing higher intensities in specific directions, depending on the dynamics and geometry of the rupture. This is what is known as the directivity effect. Furthermore, both the intensity and the shape of the wave vary depending on the propagation medium. Ground motion prediction models deal with the spread of the released energy from source to site. Local site effects, both soil effects and topographical effects, are also important. Rigid media, such as rocky and stiff soils, do not tend to amplify the seismic motion, while soft soils amplify specific frequencies depending on local sub-soil geology and on the motion characteristics. Directionality effects refer to the strong motion in a specific site. This thesis deals with two important issues related to directionality. The first one refers to the orientation of the sensors recording the seismic actions; the second one refers to the expected damage in buildings depending on the directions of their strong and weak main axes. It is worth to mention that nowadays, directionality effects are not considered in most structural regulations. In this thesis, special attention is paid to the directionality and soil effects. Since 2008, around 360,000 earthquake fatalities have been reported. This evidence demonstrates the need to develop more and better ways to assess and to prevent seismic risk. Therefore, the main objective of this thesis is to identify and evaluate the strong-motion directionality and the soils’ effects on the seismic hazard and risk, with applications to strong-motion data sets and soils' in urban environments. This thesis is divided into three principal blocks: I) directionality effects, II) Soils' effects, site classification and other seismic risk related issues and, III) other relevant contributions. In the first block, directionality effects have been considered in the expected strong seismic actions, through the estimation of intensity measures using databases from Italy and Costa Rica. Also, in the assessment of the expected damage of buildings through non-linear dynamic analyses, a simplified approach has been proposed to consider directionality effects. In the second block, microzonation and soil-building resonance effects in the city of Barcelona are studied. In addition, a seismic site classification is defined for the Spanish strong-motion network. The dynamic soil-structure interaction, considering directionality effects and, the proposal of a new drift-correlated intensity measure, appeared as supplementary subjects in this block. Finally, in the third block, other relevant contributions were included to complement this dissertation. The results demonstrate 1) that directionality effects in expected seismic actions are significant and should be considered in Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Analysis (PSHA) and in seismic risk assessments; and 2) they confirm the relevance that site effects (soil effects), has both in seismic hazard studies and in the assessment of the expected damage. This PhD thesis wants to be an additional step towards the assessment, prevention, and reduction of the risk due to earthquakes. En la majoria dels casos, aquestes forces són causades per processos relacionats amb l’alliberament d'energia, produït pel contacte entre plaques tectòniques. Altres terratrèmols menys freqüents, són els induïts per activitats antròpiques o els d’origen volcànic. En qualsevol cas, l'energia s'allibera en forma d'ones multidireccionals, que arriben a la superfície, causant efectes diversos. Les intensitats causades per un terratrèmol però, no són uniformes en totes les direccions de la seva propagació. Tot sovint, el moviment fort està polaritzat, degut al tipus de falla i/o a la proximitat a l’hipocentre, de forma que, depenent de la geometria i dinàmica de la ruptura, les acceleracions són més intenses en determinades direccions. Aquest fenomen es coneix com l’efecte de directivitat. D’altra banda, la intensitat i la forma de l'ona varien depenent del medi de propagació. En aquest sentit, els models predictius del moviment fort del sòl tenen en compte, també, el efectes deguts a la propagació, des de la font al lloc d’interès, de l'energia alliberada. Els efectes locals, principalment els deguts a la topografia i a la geologia locals, també són importants. Els medis rígids, com els sòls rocosos i compactes, no tendeixen a amplificar el moviment sísmic, mentre que els sòls tous sí que amplifiquen freqüències específiques, depenent de les propietats del subsòl i de les característiques del moviment. Els efectes de direccionalitat fan referència al moviment fort en un lloc específic. Aquesta tesis aborda dos temes importants en relació a aquests efectes. El primer es refereix a l’orientació dels sensors que enregistren les accions sísmiques; el segon està relacionat amb el dany esperat en edificis concrets, depenent de l'orientació dels seus eixos principals. Val a dir que, avui en dia, la major part de les normatives sísmiques encara no consideren els efectes de direccionalitat. En aquesta tesis, es fa especial atenció a la direccionalitat i als efectes de sòl. Des de l’any 2008, s'ha informat de 360.000 morts, aproximadament, per causa de terratrèmols. Aquest fet evidencia la necessitat de desenvolupar més i millors maneres d'avaluar i prevenir el risc sísmic. Així doncs, l'objectiu principal d'aquesta tesis ha estat identificar i avaluar com la direccionalitat del moviment fort i els efectes de sòl influeixen en la perillositat i el risc sísmic, amb aplicacions a la zonificació sísmica de sòls en entorns urbans i a grans bases de dades d’accelerogrames. La tesis es divideix en tres blocs: I) els efectes de direccionalitat, II) els efectes de sòl, classificació de llocs i altres temes relacionats amb el risc sísmic, i III) altres contribucions rellevants. En el primer bloc, s'han considerat els efectes de direccionalitat en les accions esperades; per la qual cosa, s’han estimat mesures d'intensitat utilitzant les bases de dades d'Itàlia i Costa Rica. A més, en l'avaluació del dany previsible en edificis, emprant anàlisis dinàmiques no lineals, s'ha proposat un nou plantejament que permet considerar els efectes de direccionalitat de forma simplificada. En el segon bloc, es realitzen estudis de micro-zonació i de ressonància (sòledifici) a la ciutat de Barcelona; tanmateix , es realitza una classificació sísmica dels emplaçaments de les estacions acceleromètriques de la xarxa espanyola; l'anàlisi d'interacció sòl-estructura, considerant els efectes de direccionalitat, i la proposta d'una nova mesura d'intensitat, molt correlacionada amb la deriva (drift), apareixen com a temes complementaris en aquest bloc. Finalment, en el tercer bloc, s’inclouen altres contribucions rellevants que completen aquesta dissertació. Els resultats demostren, 1), que els efectes de direccionalitat en les accions sísmiques esperades són significatius i cal considerar-los en els estudis probabilístics d’amenaça sísmica, així com en les avaluacions de risc sísmic i confirmen, 2) la rellevància que els efectes de lloc tenen, tant en els estudis del perill sísmic com en l’avaluació del dany esperat en estructures. Aquesta tesis doctoral vol ser un pas endavant vers l’avaluació, prevenció i reducció del risc sísmic.

Intensity and damage statistics of the September 19, 2017 Mexico earthquake: Influence of soft story and corner asymmetry on the damage reported during the earthquake
A destructive intraslab earthquake occurred in Mexico City on September 19, 2017 (Mw 7.1), causing significant damage and hundreds of human losses not only in the epicentral area, but also in the States of Morelos, Puebla, Mexico and in Mexico City. Only in Mexico City itself, around 230 people died, and more than 40 buildings collapsed. The intensities recorded in some lakebed areas of the city, especially in zones with soil periods around 1.5 s, were relatively high, even surpassing spectral values of 1.0 g; the vertical component, due to the proximity of the earthquake, was unusually high for Mexico City. The 2017 earthquake raised questions critical to understanding the city’s seismic vulnerability and resilience, and they are partly answered in this article. Using 77 accelerometric stations, the amplification pattern of the seismic intensities is characterized as well as the correlations of buildings structural characteristics with the site effects. A comprehensive statistical analysis of the damages is shown to analyze and understand the structural behavior of damaged buildings. It is including not only the structural types and the year of construction, but also the main structural problems identified (structural pathologies), such as irregularities, both in elevation and plan, soft story, and corner effect. The building damage database was constructed with 2125 reports of buildings carried out by universities and engineering associations after the earthquake, of which 543 had severe damage. It is also included the information of all buildings with no damage in the city thanks to the cadastral information provided by the Mexico City government, and post-earthquake inspections and visual inspections using Google Street View. A full study of selected neighborhoods, which compares similar buildings with and without damage, is included, yielding relevant statistical information on which pathologies cause more damage and even collapses.
