Employing the theoretical framework that represents a unique amalgam of the domains of multimodality, intermediality, transmedia storytelling and adaptation, the paper analyses the process of medial transposition of the folk fairy tale Baš-Čelik, primarily into Đorđe Lobačev’s comic book of the same name (1939/1989), and then into Petar Meseldžija’s 2008 illustrated book The Legend of Baš-Čelik (orig. Legenda o Baš-Čeliku). The paper presents verbal and graphic tools used by these authors in adapting the original text from a monomodal into multimodal media, with a special focus on three research directions. The first is the manner in which the compositional structure of the fairy tale is transferred into the comic and the illustrated book, with the aim of assessing the level of fidelity in these adaptations. The second direction is related to the most important narrative and stylistic differences (e.g., language and tone of narration). The third direction deals with the use of certain comics-specific techniques and resources, such as page layout, use of colour for emphasis, representation of speed and motion, and the presence or absence of particular graphic devices (upfixes and pictorial runes). Finally, the adaptations themselves are compared to each other, highlighting the major similarities and differences between them.

Page layout is one of the most salient features of graphic novels and comics that readers encounter: even before engaging with specific content, an overall impression of the page composition will have already been communicated. In the critical literature on comics and graphic novels, it is also commonly claimed that page composition plays a significant role for narrative construction, pacing, and other aspects of reception. However, in contrast to this prominence, methods for engaging systematically with the analysis of page design in comics and graphic novels are still in their infancy. Empirical studies of the workings of visual page composition are rarer still. In this article, the authors report results, drawing on a diachronic, corpus-based investigation of page composition that illustrates how it is beneficial to approach page composition employing methods from corpus linguistics and multimodality. They show not only that it is possible to isolate trajectories of change in composition over time but also that such studies can be used to provide evidence of functionally-motivated variation in compositional choices.

The last few years have seen a flurry of academic activities on comics in the Nordic countries. But are we on the verge of establishing an independent field or a discipline of comics studies, or both? And if so, is this desirable? On an international level, comics studies have for some time been an intellectual field and can now be said to be on a pre-paradigmatic level as a discipline. In the Nordic countries, the field of comics studies has grown rapidly the last few years, but it is still very much dispersed, with researchers working at different departments and within a number of disciplines. There are tendencies towards a maturing into a more cohesive field, but this is a recent development. The establishing of a comics studies discipline, though keeping an open "rural mode" of knowledge production to prevent a loss of the positive aspects of interdisciplinary research, would facilitate the possibilities for professors' seats, journals, specific grants, recurring conferences and research libraries -and thus a more rapid growth of comics studies.
