Comfort Sensations of Polo Shirts With and Without Wrinkle-Free Treatment

Abstract: This paper reports an experimental investigation of comfort sensations of people wearing polo shirts with different garment treatments. Subjects are asked to rate their comfort sensations before and after exercising. Before exercise, overall discomfort is largely determined by tactile sensations ( e.g., itchiness and prickliness): after exercise. overall discomfort is mostly governed by moisture related sensations ( e.g., dampness and clinginess).

“…39 The sleeve trials conducted by Doyle et al 39 used the innovative approach of comparing the wearer's perceptions of a test sleeve worn on one arm with the wearer's perceptions to a control sleeve worn on the other arm. The approach of using paired comparisons for sensory evaluation of textiles is not new, as Lau et al 40 used polo shirts made of two fabrics, one for each side of the body. In any experiment that includes some biological aspect, such as people or animals, there will always be variance due to the treatments (such as different fabrics) and variance due to people or animals.…”

“…With heavy exercise and sweating, moisture related sensations (non-absorbency, clinginess, and dampness) are critical in determining overall discomfort. Sportswear should therefore have excellent water absorption properties (Lau et al, 2002). © Woodhead Publishing Limited, 2011…”

“…Curvature and protuberance increase bring about more pressure on the clothes. This indicates that putting load on a specific part of body with more eminence (such as the leg), is more comfortable than other parts which have less eminence (such as the wrist) [11,12].…”
