Background: Negative death attitudes and death fear were reported at a high level among intensive care patients. Research indicates that nurses should know the factors affecting the death attitudes and death anxiety in intensive care patients to reduce these high levels of anxiety and negative attitudes. Religions have a strong relationship with death.Aim: This cross-sectional study was conducted to determine the effect of religious attitudes on death attitudes and death anxiety in elderly intensive care patients.Methods: The data of the study were collected between January 2019 and January 2020 in the intensive care unit of a university hospital in a province located in the east of Turkey. A total of 185 elderly patients participated in the study. Patient Identification Form, Ok-Religious Attitude Scale (ORAS), the Death Anxiety Scale (DAS), and Death Attitudes Profile-Revised (DAP) were used for data collection. IBM SPSS version 25.0 was used for data analysis.Results: Most of the patients (88.6%) were at high level of self-reported religious attitudes. The mean DAS score of the patients was 9.02 ± 1.64, DAP was 120.40 ± 23.70, and ORAS was 31.25 ± 2.90. According to regression analysis, the increase in ORAS scores decreased the DAS score and increased the DAP score (p <0.05).Conclusion: There was a negative relationship between religious attitudes and death anxiety and a positive relationship between religious attitudes and attitudes towards death in elderly patients in intensive care units. Nurses should evaluate the patients’ religious attitudes while they plan interventions to reduce patients’ death anxiety or to develop positive attitudes toward death in these patients.

“…The fact that the lower level of global comfort and the "Support" dimension falls in the higher income class shows that higher schooling and monthly income can contribute to family members being more demanding and aware of the services and rights they may require from the hospital and professionals. [14] The lower level of comfort in the dimension "Interaction with yourself and daily life" for the mother or father of the hospitalized relative reflects that having a child hospitalized in the ICU can affect the family, bringing changes in the routine and can arouse a feeling of impotence, [15] since there is a reversal of roles, because parents do not expect to experience the risk of losing the child. The higher level found for spouses may be related to the fact that they imagine each other's caregivers in case of illness.…”

Objective: To verify the variables related to the comfort level of family members of people in intensive care units.Methods: Cross-sectional study, conducted in six intensive care units, with 250 family members, using the Comfort Scale for Family Members of People in Critical Health State. The sample data were analyzed in absolute and relative frequencies, means and standard deviation. The level of global comfort and dimension were analyzed by the arithmetic mean of the response levels of the Comfort Scale for Family Members of People in Critical Health State. The One-Way test (ANOVA) was used to analyze differences in the means of the comfort level of the previously mentioned scale according to variables of interest.Results: The variables severity level, hospitalization time and nature of the relationship of the family member and relative, as well as gender, age, income were statistically significant in relation to the comfort level. Conclusions: Variables related to the context of hospitalization of the relative and sociodemographic data of the family members were related to the level of comfort.

Psychometric analysis of the comfort scale for family members of people in critical health condition

Objectives: to assess the reliability and validity of the 46 items version of the comfort scale for family members of people in critical condition. Methods: a methodological study, carried out with 278 family members of critically ill patients, admitted to adult and pediatric intensive care units, in a city in the interior of the state of São Paulo, in Brazil. The analyzes were based on the Classical Test Theory and Item Response Theory. Results: Horn’s parallel analysis and exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis did not identify the scale’s unidimensionality nor the tridimensionality. The maximum factor loads were positive. The scale proved to be reliable (α=0.93 and Ω=0.63), most item-total correlations were greater than 0.28 and the discrimination coefficients were greater than one. Conclusions: the scale showed satisfactory reliability and relative construct validity. However, the recommended tridimensional structure for the scale has not been confirmed.
