Combustion Synthesis of the Zn2SiO4:Mn Phosphor

Abstract: Synthesis of Mn 2þ -activated zinc silicate phosphor using the combustion method is described. An efficient phosphor can be prepared by this method at reaction temperatures as low as 500 C in a few minutes. The phosphor so prepared is compared with those prepared by other methods such as sol-gel and CGUPS.

“…The half-width for the single narrow emission band of M 2 Si 5 N 8 :Mn 2+ phosphors is about 60 nm for M=Sr and Ba, and 70 nm for M=Ca, which resembles with the literature values, e.g. about 70 nm for Zn 3 (PO 4 ) 2 :Mn 2+ [29], 60 nm for Ba 2 ZnS 3 :Mn 2+ [20][21][22] and 40 nm for Zn 2 SiO 4 :Mn 2+ [30]. This half-width is significantly smaller than that of red Eu 2+ emission (100 nm) in M 2 Si 5 N 8 host lattices [4].…”

“…The NaMgBO 3 :Dy 3+ and NaMgBO 3 :Sm 3+ phosphors are prepared by well-established solution combustion synthesis method (Bhatkar et al 2002;Thakare et al 2007;Bhatkar et al 2007;Sonekar et al 2007;Sonekar et al 2009;Bajaj and Omanwar 2014;Wu et al 2005). During the reaction, the stoichiometric amounts of high purity starting components, NaNO 3 (G.R.…”

“…The main reason of emphasizing on borate is their variety of structure types, transparency to a wide range of wavelengths, high laser damage tolerance, and high optical quality (Bajaj and Omanwar 2013). Combustion synthesis is a good low-cost, one-step, and lowtemperature method for the synthesis of borates, phosphates, and silicates (Khan et al 2015;Bhatkar et al 2002;Thakare et al 2007;Bhatkar et al 2007;Sonekar et al 2007;Sonekar et al 2009). Some orthoborates, LiMgBO 3 :Dy 3+ (Bajaj and Omanwar 2014), NaCaBO3 (Wu et al 2005) (Kumar et al 2013), NaCaBO 3 : Ce 3+ , Mn 2+ (Sun et al 2013), NaCaBO 3 :Ce 3+ , Tb 3+ , Mn 2+ (Zhang and Gong 2014), NaCaBO 3 :Sm 3+ (Bedyal et al 2014), etc., have been synthesized with different methods to explore their crystal structure and luminescent properties for probable applications in medical as well as industrial fields.…”

“…Borate phosphors were prepared by a novel method described earlier [10] which is a variation of the combustion synthesis [11,12]. Heat generated in the exothermic reaction between ammonium nitrate and urea is used to carry out the synthesis.…”
