Combustion Synthesis of BiOCl with Tunable Percentage of Exposed {001} Facets and Enhanced Photocatalytic Properties

Abstract: Bismuth oxychloride (BiOCl) was synthesized by a simple combustion method. The structures, morphologies, absorbance, optical, and photocatalytic properties of the samples were studied by X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry, and photoluminescence. The experimental results show that BiOCl microsheet with high percentage of exposed {001} facets was obtained. It is interesting to note that the thickness of BiOCl sheets, in … Show more

“…In our previous reports, we obtained BiOCl and BiOBr photocatalysts with tunable exposing proportion of {001} facets via the combustion method using urea as the fuel [6,15]. Herein, we further one-pot synthesized AgCl/BiOCl heterojunction photocatalysts via the simple combustion method, which was rarely reported to the best of our knowledge.…”

“…BiOCl has a tetragonal structure with lattice constants of a = b = 0.389 and c = 0.789 nm [5]. In its crystal structure, a layer structure (parallel to {001} facets) characterized by [Bi 2 O 2 ] slabs is interleaved by double slabs of Cl atoms [6]. The strong internal static electric fields perpendicular to the Cl layer and the bismuth oxide-based fluorite-like layer endow the effective separation of photogenerated electrons and holes [7].…”

“…In our previous reports, we synthesized Ag/NiFe 2 O 4 composites via the combustion method, and the formation of NiFe 2 O 4 and the reduction of Ag + to metallic Ag were one-pot achieved through the redox reduction between the nitrates and citric acid [34]. Moreover, we obtained BiOCl photocatalysts with tunable exposing proportion of {001} facets via the combustion method using urea as the fuel [35]. Herein, using citric acid, rather than urea, as the fuel, we further synthesized Bi/BiOCl composites via the combustion method.…”
