The distribution of mass density through the thickness of Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) panels is known to be non-uniform. A few studies have previously investigated the influence of this non-uniform through-thickness density distribution on the thermal behavior of MDF panels in small-scale tests. This study assesses the significance of this material property on flame spread simulations in a medium-scale setup , namely that of Single Burning Item (SBI) corner fire tests. Simulations are performed using FireFOAM 2.2.x, considering both uniform and non-uniform MDF material density profiles, using model-effective material properties determined from bench-scale pyrolysis tests conducted in a Fire Propagation Apparatus (FPA). The heat transfer from the gas phase is modeled by means of empirical expressions with adjusted parameters. Sciences, who aided me regarding most aspects of this thesis. Without her input as to the format of the thesis, methodology, and physical interpretation of simulation results, this thesis may have been challenging to read and possibly somewhat meager. Especially considering the complex physics and mathematics encompassed in CFD simulation tools, such an accomplished sparring partner has been of value. Additionally, thanks to my external tutor and now colleague at Rambøll Norway Ltd, Master of Science grad. Yvonne Bjarkø Skaare, who, in the spring of 2018, presented me with several basic outlines for possible themes for my thesis. These were themes regarding issues often encountered using fire simulation tools in the context of performance-based design. In collaboration, we deemed the most promising, and of importance to the field, the feasibility study of correlating fuel input simulation parameters to mass quantity output, which eventually led to this thesis. Yvonne also provided me with valuable input as to simulation series setup , relevant for the fire safety engineering community, as well as feedback on the thesis and simulation results. Finally, thanks to my department at Rambøll, for letting me use the company Pyrosim license and "computer park". As I've conducted several hundred simulations (including preliminary studies), this has been essential to my thesis.

Computational Analysis of Fire Dynamics Inside a Wind Turbine

Wind turbines are generally considered cost-effective, reliable and sustainable energy sources. Fires are not common in wind turbines, but a significant number of fires occur every year due to the large number of turbines installed. Wind turbine fires are difficult to extinguish hence significant damage is expected. Due to the unmanned operation, the probability of a turbine being occupied during a fire is very low. However, operators can do several tasks every week, and hence be exposed to a certain risk. Moreover, there is a general lack of information about how a fire develops inside a wind turbine and the subsequent evolution of the tenability conditions during the time required for an eventual evacuation. Gamesa has been working on fire safety since 2013, using CFD fire modelling to provide insights on wind turbine fire development for the design of emergency procedures. The paper describes a fire hazard analysis performed in a Gamesa's 2.5 MW turbine.A CFD simulation is carried out to estimate the effects during the first minutes of a typical wind turbine fire in an electrical cabinet. Results show that average oxygen concentration at the nacelle remains above 19.5% during the first 10 minutes; temperature remains below 60ºC for 12 minutes if measured at 1.5 m; and visibility is on average assured at heights lower than 1.5 m, with values above 5 m during the first 8 minutes in worse locations, implying no danger for personnel. The potential of this type of analysis to design safer wind turbines under performance-based approaches is clearly demonstrated.
