Maritime environmental regulations stipulate lower emissions from the shipping industry. To cope with these rules, improving the combustion processes, make use of cleaner alternative fuels and implement exhaust gas cleaning systems is necessary. Alternative fuels, like fish oil, have a potential to reduce soot formation during the combustion process and will be deeply investigated in this paper. For this purpose, two different types of fish oil and their blends with marine gas oil (MGO) have been tested in a constant volume pre-combustion cell (CVPC). The CVPC laboratory was built in collaboration between MARINTEK and NTNU. To generate similar injection condition in the combustion cell as in an internal combustion engine, the CVPC is heated using a chemical heating process. The CVPC is used as a fundamental investigation tool for studying the fuel injection system for large engine applications. Parameters that were studied include the combustion, spray development, fuel evaporation process and ignition delay. The general experimental setup of the test facility is described and the optical methods applied are explained for the investigation of fish oil. The aim is to study soot intensity and spray development and to compare the results to pure low-sulphur MGO as a reference fuel. The results conclude that the combustion and ignition properties of fish oil are very similar to marine gas oil and this makes it applicable as an alternative fuel for power generation in the maritime industry. The tests also showed a significant decrease in soot formation for the two fish oils.

Salmon oil directly obtained from salmon silage in a tricanter centrifuge was subjected to homogeneous acid‐catalyzed esterification. Alcohol‐to‐oil molar ratio, catalyst amount, and reaction temperature were varied in order to obtain the kinetic parameters that fit the data satisfactory. A reaction mechanism with four consecutive reactions was considered and the attack of the nucleophile alcohol to the protonated carbonyl substrate was corroborated to be the rate‐determining step, in accordance with previous studies in free fatty acids esterification. A kinetic model with 8 independent parameters described with high accuracy the experimental data of 27 reactions with a regression coefficient of 90.94%. Pre‐esterified oil was submitted to transesterification and properties of resulting methyl esters were measured. Acidity, peroxide value, viscosity and flash point were acceptable to use as diesel‐grade fuel. However, cold flow properties and especially oxidative stability can limit its use as automotive fuel. Finally, a techno‐economic analysis was performed and the influence of salmon oil price on the viability of a low capacity fuel production plant was analyzed. The potential of conch shells (CSs) as a suitable heterogeneous basic catalyst for transesterification of high FFA content non‐edible Moringa oleifera oil (MOO) was investigated. Biodiesel was produced by a two‐step transesterification process. In the first step, high FFA content of the oil was reduced from 40.25 to 1.4% using reaction conditions of 1:2 v/v methanol to oil ratio, 1.5 vol% H2SO4 concentration, 2 h reaction time and 60°C reaction temperature. In the second step, the esterified oil was converted into biodiesel by reacting with methanol using calcined conch shells (CCSs) as a heterogeneous basic catalyst. The physiochemical characteristics of the CCS catalyst were studied by X‐ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive X‐ray (SEM–EDAX), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) analysis. The characterization results revealed that calcium oxide (CaO) was the major phase of CCS. The effect of process variables on biodiesel conversion was investigated by response surface methodology using Box–Behnken design and the independent variables taken for study are catalyst concentration, methanol to oil ratio and reaction time. The optimum process conditions were found to be 8.02 wt % catalyst concentration, 8.66:1 methanol to oil molar ratio and 130 min reaction time. Under these experimental conditions, methyl ester conversion of 97.06% was obtained which was in reasonable agreement with the predicted value. The structure of Moringa oleifera methyl ester (MOME) was characterized by FTIR and methyl ester conversion was determined by proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H‐NMR) spectroscopy. © 2018 American Institute of Chemical Engineers Environ Prog, 38:e13015, 2019
