Combining Ultrafiltration and Nanofiltration to Obtain a Concentrated Extract of Purified Polyphenols from Wet Olive Pomace

Abstract: Despite the environmental concerns raised every year by the generation of high volumes of wet olive pomace, it contains valuable phenolic compounds that are essential for the valorization of this by-product. In this work, an integrated process to recover phenolic compounds from wet olive pomace is proposed. It consists of ultrasound-assisted solid-liquid extraction, followed by ultrafiltration and nanofiltration. Several commercial membranes were studied at different operational conditions. The ultrafiltration… Show more

“…In a previous work by the authors, the rejection of phenolic compounds during the ultrafiltration of aqueous extracts (without ethanol) of wet olive pomace was reported, employing the same membrane (UP005) in cross-flow mode [41]. If those results are compared with this work, it is noticeable that lower rejections of biophenols are obtained when the extract is solvent-based.…”

“…These molecules can sequester or inhibit reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, reducing potential inflammatory events. At the same time, thanks to their anti-radical power, they can transfer electrons to free radicals, preventing adverse effects on the organism [7]. Different studies have highlighted the diverse biological properties of polyphenols, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, cardioprotective, and neuroprotective activities [8][9][10].…”

“…Therefore, it is necessary to develop treatment techniques that manage to provide treatment in an energy-efficient manner. The recovery of compounds present in wastewater begins as a strategy to amortize wastewater treatment, since it is possible to obtain products with high profit from waste, promoting a circular economy [ 3 ]. In OMW, the phenolic compounds mainly provide its phytotoxic character.…”
