Combining the roles of clinical nurse specialist and neonatal nurse practitioner: The experience in one academic tertiary care setting

Abstract: The roles of clinical nurse specialist (CNS) neonatal nurse practitioner (NNP) have originated and evolved to meet specific needs in the nursing and medical community. The CNS role was developed in response to the perception that patient care needed to be improved; the NNP role resulted from an acute shortage of physicians to provide neonatal medical management. IntroduçãoA expansão significativa do conhecimento em neonatologia ocorreu por volta do período de 1970 com o desenvolvimento da tecnologia nas diversas áreas, tendência esta que contribuiu para o desenvolvimento de tecnologias apropriadas à assistência neonatal (1,2) .A introdução de ações mais complexas que incluem métodos, procedimentos, técnicas, equipamentos e outros instrumentos aplicados, sistematicamente, para resolver problemas específicos dos cuidados cotidianos requerendo refinamento das habilidades técnicas e conhecimento. A introdução destas ações determinou mudanças nas práticas profissionais daqueles que se encarregam da assistência ao recém-nascido.
