Combining the Analytical Hierarchy Process and the Genetic Algorithm to Solve the Timetable Problem

Abstract: The main problems of school course timetabling are time, curriculum, and classrooms. In addition there are other problems that vary from one institution to another. This paper is intended to solve the problem of satisfying the teachers' preferred schedule in a way that regards the importance of the teacher to the supervising institute, i.e. his score according to some criteria. Genetic algorithm (GA) has been presented as an elegant method in solving timetable problem (TTP) in order to produce solutions with n… Show more

“…In 1980, 2000 Saaty developed AHP, which decomposes a decision-making problem into a system of hierarchies of objectives, attributes (or criteria) and alternatives [6] [7]. AHP can efficiently deal with objective and subjective attributes, especially where the subjective judgments of different individuals constitute an important part of the decision process.…”

“…DSS in joint with integrated, genetic algorithms can experience behavioral changes and adapt over time in order to provide improved decision support based on previous experience. In this sort of instance, various GA-based decision support systems are developed as a genetic algorithm is being integrated [8].…”

“…This research will develop intelligent decision support system that is combination of Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method. GA is a method that is able to look for possibilities from candidate solutions to obtain an optimal solution for problem solving, GA method is also able to solve problems that are heuristic, for that need a combination of methods to be able to combine quantitative and qualitative problems with the purpose of research results can describe the interests of decision makers [6][7] [8].…”

“…Meanwhile, satisfaction is not the only characteristic considered to measure progress and achieved results in a team. In technology environment, the relationship between work and other social and human factors might be much more relevant when an organization needs to reach its desired goals, such as, performance and productivity [9,10,5,11,12,13,14,15], quality [3,16], social interactions between software developers [11,17], and motivation [1,18]. However, based on Diener's happiness definition [19] where being happy or unhappy is associated with the frequency of positive and negative experiences, the above cited factors have a strong connection and relevance with software engineers' affects in their work environment.…”
