We propose a near intercarrier interference (ICI)-free and very low complexity iterative detector for frequency-asynchronous distributed Alamouti-coded (FADAC) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). In the previous cancelation schemes, the entire subcarrier signals from one transmit (TX) antenna are estimated and canceled in the received signal from the other TX antenna and vice versa. However, the reliability of the estimated symbols are revealed to significantly vary across the subcarriers and thus, the poorly estimated symbols lead to the incorrect cancelation. Motivated from this, we first propose a scheme which does not cancel the interfering subcarrier(s) at the half band edges which undergo very high interference in FADAC-OFDM. For further improvement, we propose a so-called selective scheme which instantly measures the reliability of the detected symbols at each iteration and then exclude the unreliable symbols in the estimated interference generation. Moreover, the proposed scheme has a drastically reduced complexity by converting the cancelation process from the subcarrier domain to the time domain. In accordance with the analysis on the considered reliability measures, the numerical results show that the proposed scheme achieves the near ICI-free level only within three or four iterations for wide ranges of SNR, frequency offset, and delay spread.

The proposed Alamouti coded OFDM effectively cancels Inter Carrier Interference (ICI) due to frequency offset between distributed antennas. The conventional Alamouti coded OFDM schemes to mitigate ICI utilize N-point Inverse Fast Fourier Transform/Fast Fourier Transform (IFFT/FFT) operations for OFDM modulation and demodulation processes with total N subcarriers. However, the performance degrades because ICI is also repeated in N periods due to the property of N-point IFFT/FFT operation. In order to avoid this problem, null data are used at the subcarriers with large ICI and thus, data rate decreases. The proposed scheme employs 2N-point IFFT/FFT instead of N-point IFFT/FFT in order to increase sampling rate. By increasing sampling rate, the amount of interference significantly decreases because the period of ICI also increases. The proposed scheme increases the data rate and improves the performance by reducing amount of ICI and the number of null-data.Furthermore, the gain of the performance and data rate of the proposed scheme is significant with higher modulation such as 16-Quadarature Amplitude Modulation (QAM) or 64-QAM.

To further enhance frequency-asynchronous distributed Alamouti-coded (FADAC) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), we propose a new scheme which combines the partial maximum likelihood detection (PMLD) to the residual intercarrier interference cancellation (RIC). In order to decrease the performance gap from intercarrier interference- (ICI-) free level after single time iteration of the RIC, the final stage of the proposed scheme performs the PMLD limited to the symbols of less-reliable decision variables. We show that with the practically acceptable candidate symbol set size, a single iteration for RIC is enough to achieve the ICI-free performance. Moreover, the proposed scheme substantially expands the allowable ranges of the three undesirable terms, i.e., the timing and frequency offsets between the transmit antennas and the multipath delay spreads.
