Combining Marine Ecology and Economy to Roadmap the Integrated Coastal Management: A Systematic Literature Review

Abstract: Integrated coastal management (ICM) relies on the inclusion of economic issues within marine ecology. To assess the progress of this integration, we applied topic modelling and network analysis to explore the pertinent literature (583 Isi-WoS, and 5459 Scopus papers). We classified the topics of interest (i.e., concepts, approaches, and sectors) that combined ecological and economic issues within marine science, we aggregated these topics in fields pertinent to ICM, and tracked the knowledge-exchange between t… Show more

“…Recently, a very popular new discipline is known as ecological economics. According to Mele et al [17], Long et al [18], and Patterson and Glavovic [19], ecological economics combines both doctrines: From one side, it researches the connections between the physical issues and the biological realms, and from the other side, it explores monetary exchange processes on micro, mezzo, and macro levels of economy. This discipline, which is the link between economics and ecology, arose from the need to emphasize their connection, given their social, environmental, political, and sustainable importance nowadays.…”

“…This discipline, which is the link between economics and ecology, arose from the need to emphasize their connection, given their social, environmental, political, and sustainable importance nowadays. An even more specific aspect of the ecological economy is the marine economy or maritime, which is the basis of coastal management [17][18][19][20][21][22]. Marine economy analyzes the natural and economic potential of the region, predicts the ecological consequences, and strives to preserve the environment.…”
